Hello all,

 

My parents have FTTC broadband provided by plus.net which is part of a legacy deal, they have been supplied a BT Openreach Fibre Modem and this in turn connects into the supplied but awful Technicolor TG582n modem that plus.net have given them for free under their deal.

 

The wifi on this device is woeful to put it nicely and I have been wondering about getting it replaced with a device with AC based wifi as it has a radius of about 10 meters from the device and doesn't seem to penetrate the brick walls all too well.

 

Is it a matter of just replacing this device with a cable type wifi router ? I assume the ethernet connection from the existing open reach modem will just plug into a new router.

 

They have a couple of fire sticks and want to be able to stream netflix - which should be doable (they get about 15mbps now on this connection-max length from an exchange miles away when a nearer one is about 1.5 miles down the road)

 

Can anyone recommend a router for me which does decent wifi, their internal walls are all brick and nothing strange really or unusual in the walls ? I am looking to spend no more than £50 or thereabouts if possible.

Get rid of the router ASAP!! It annoyed me so much. I ended up buying an airport extreme and it works brilliantly.

I don't think channel changing will work on this one, it really is an awful wireless N based router, (I know decent wifi as I have a superhub2 now) as you can see from this picture, it doesn't even look made for WiFi going by modern router standards.

 

I think that they will most likely need to change their router from this one, it was ok for a while, but now they are doing more on the wifi its not holding up that well at all and its penetration is awful at my mum and dads, literally you cannot get signal in places over 5 metres away going through minor brick walls with this thing.

I am also on plus.net with the same setup and it works just about although for good coverage upstairs I do need another access point.

 

You could replace their wifi device with another one as long as it gives you a wan port that support pope to bring up the connection.

I tried to change mine last year when the service went down and I was trying to test whether it was the router. I found the support people totally unable to help with any setup that was at all non-standard. Ours works OK so I have just left it and used powerline in a spot where the WiFi is ropey. We have a Chromebook, a PS4, a TV and two phones connected much of the time. You could always just get an extender if coverage is the main issue.

It's quite simple to use another device over the last year I've used a Sophos utm and just the Ethernet on my laptop to create a ppoe connection to the supplied bt vdsl modem.
