Not really. A 500GB SSHD is about the same price as a 120GB SSD.

 

The SSD will wipe the floor with the SSHD in terms of performance.

I've found that so long as the CPU is better than an old celeron and you have 4GB ram in everything an SSD shows massive gains. If you have celerons or less than 4GB ram though then an SSD is a bit like polishing a turd.

They of course don't mention that it has the worst possible screen, a touchpad which makes you want to throw it out of a window and build quality that will make it fall apart if you do so much as belch in the same building

Another thing PC World don't mention is the manufacturer bloatware and Norton Antivirus subscription they foist upon unsuspecting customers, which brings even the fastest Core i7 PC to its knees, especially if it's a laptop with a 5,400rpm HDD!

 

It's a shame the average consumer isn't better informed. They would end up with a faster PC.

If they see "120GB SSD" instead, they're going think "Hmm, smaller number, not gonna buy that".

And yet Apple manages to sell SSD only laptops without any problems. Perhaps it's because they are shinier?

I've had 2 Dell laptops with the SSHD's (an xps and a Latitude, both i5s) from their outlet store. They've been transformed by 50 quid of SSD

 

In hindsight, I'd say they were barely any quicker than conventional spinning rust.

I think that's a little unfair. The performance benefit you get from a sshd depends entirely on how you use the machine. If you just boot the thing up and use a couple of applications which fit in the ssd cache, you'll see the most benefit. If you have lots of big apps plus lots of data, you won't see much.

 

I had an old MacBook with a sshd and it certainly helped with its performance. That said, it was never used for much more than internet browsing and Office.
