itguy22 Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Random question...... Does anybody know of any free accredited technical/management training ? Thank you.
jdoyle Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 not so sure there's much free accredited online. I'm signed up for the Intro to Cyber Security offering on FutureLearn that starts in January https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/introduction-to-cyber-security There are a few other technical and management courses that appear on the site. 3
itguy22 Posted December 9, 2015 Author Posted December 9, 2015 Thanks for that. Just trying to find some quality low cost CPD but not having much luck. Merry Christmas

jdoyle Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I recently completed that very course. how did you get on with it? Worth the time/effort?
Gibson335 Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 how did you get on with it? Worth the time/effort? Depends. If you like acquiring certificates (which you have to pay for) then it's a fairly easy achievement. If cyber security is a weakness, then it may teach you something. May be worthy doing just for CPD.

Just interested in the topic.
primarytechy Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Cheers Guys. Certainly worth a shot! As it's free and the current climate.
garethEds Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 What about the Microsoft Virtual Academy stuff. Ask @rich_tech - he's done a few. GJE 1
featured_spectre Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 I've done most of the MVA stuff. It's not as easy as people think when you get further into it. Azure SQL got me. Lol
rich_tech Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 I would indeed say to have a look at the Microsoft Virtual Academy as @garethedmondson pointed out, I have done a good amount of their courses now to date and im in several half finished units at present also. They are good building blocks to familiarise yourself with MS technology, especially the newer technologies coming out. Training is something that most days you have to look to source yourself as pointed out in other threads on edugeek at the moment, though it isnt expensive stuff. I am sorting out my CCNA at the moment, all I have outlaid so far, is 2 £30 books (1 for each exam) and a small cisco lab (£110 on ebay), the exams themselves will be £100 a time for each of them. Its just a case of cramming in studying whenever I can. 1

Best of luck with that. Being a CCNA myself (hopefully CCNP soon!) I know they are not easy exams. I learnt lots by reading on the Cisco Learning Network and Cisco support forms. Looking at peoples symptoms of the problem and then the diagnostic. It gives you a real life prospective. One tip, for the ICND 1 exam make sure you can subnet in 2 minutes or under. Also on the exam ask for an extra whiteboard.
jtotheb Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 Also on the exam ask for an extra whiteboard. And write bit:subnets and subnet masks down the side of it before you start
Eudora931 Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 I've got some offers from Udemy - on line video courses

In fairness you have helped with the advice there to date and good luck on your CCNP there. I know their not easy exams, though I will say that I am enjoying the challenge and its the first refreshing thing I have started in a while with IT which has peaked my interest, I find it all interesting and its a little amusing that I am in my mid 30s and suddenly deciding I want to develop a career (long term goal is CCIE by the time I am 50 so 15 years to play with there). Subnetting is where I am at the moment with the CBT Nuggets stuff and Maths work is fun ! Not ! but I am getting there , I have nearly finished it now and have about 8 lessons left and half the cisco book to get through. I aim to book my ICND1 in January when the local Pearson centre re-opens after Christmas (I dont fancy an 80 mile round trip to Cardiff for it) as my friend pointed out having a date will provide more focus to working towards it. And write bit:subnets and subnet masks down the side of it before you start I am ok on the mask side of this thankfully, I had a colleague in a previous job years back that took the time to explain subnetting to me, so I have some of the information I need already (i.e. I know how many devices are in what bit, its just formulating the CIDR stuff against that now and the reverse engineering of it, but its getting there.
rich_tech Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 I've got some offers from Udemy - on line video courses They are another excellent avenue to accompany any official trainings, I followed their ITIL course to get awareness and bought their CCNA ones, I would say though, once you sign up there, courses will drop to £8 it seems to be on a cycle, so don't purchase anything ever on full price there, it seems that you see cycles of £15/£12/£8 on there quite regularly.
CyberNerd Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 Google Apps accreditation is free. Google Apps Certification 1
primarytechy Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 Thanks everybody. I have signed up to the MVA and the Intro to cyber security....
has Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 Had a look at the introduction to cyber security at Open University website. Its already available on the site. 1

I forgot we spoke about it! And with regards to the CCNP, I took the last exam 30 mins after my post this morning and passed! Such a relief! I found the biggest challenge was ICND 1 followed by CCNP Route. 1

primarytechy Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 On a similar subject.... What would you guys consider is a sought after qualification/qualification level for a network manager post?
Kitkatninja Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 There's also EDx, along with signing up for the Cyber Security course with Openlearn, also signed up for Leadership for Engineers. On a similar subject.... What would you guys consider is a sought after qualification/qualification level for a network manager post? Depends, there's Project management (eg prince2), Best/Good practice methodologies (eg ITIL, FITS), management qualifications (eg NVQ, Certs/diploma/degree of HE and post grad), higher technical certs (MCSA/MCSE/CCNA/CCNP)... Different organsations (within education and outside our sector) want/require different things...
