Moving a VM from one host to another

I'm planning to migrate awa from our current out of warranty Dell physical hosts in the next couple of months.

 

I have one VM which is a 2012r2 server core install that was set up before I arrived which is our PDC with the DHCP role active on it. I'm pretty happy with the process of moving all the ordinary VMs but I'm given to understand that as it is a PDC you can't just shut it down, copy the machine details and VHD and import it into the new host. How the hell do I move it and not bork it.

 

I've got a physical DC that is set to be the authoritative time host, just in case that matters.

If you're doing it to another HyperV host why not just live migrate? (Edit - Or VmWare suppose it doesn't matter )

Is it on shared storage? If so, then there's no problem - just go ahead and migrate to the new host.

 

If you're copying it from local storage on one host to the other, then you may want to move the FSMO roles to your physical DC depending on how long you think the copy will take.

 

Unless of course you're running NT4 and you really do have a PDC...

I didn't see an option for that... I'm currently on 2008r2 hyper v?

Even without shared storage you can migrate live now. (At least HyperV side)

Yeah, yeah, it's not really a PDC, it's a PDCe.

 

It's on DAS on the current host and will be moving to shared storage on the new host.

 

Le Edit: The move should be quick, it's only a 25gb HDD of which less than 18gb is in use

Well, it depends how fast your storage is - I'd probably be more comfy transferring the FSMO roles prior to copying it.

If the DC is a VM, then I am of the understanding that you can simply copy it to your new host.

 

My school is a VMware shop so that's how I have done it in the past.

I agree. Why the need to move roles?

Copy the vhd and recreate the VM the new host using the vhd as the vms drive.

If you've got really slow storage and it takes an age to copy you might want to move the roles to the physical DC.

Not sure if that exists in R2 2008 but when you make a new VM you have an option to restore from existing. I am far off on this one?
