garethEds Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 Morning, Bit of a noobie when it comes to OneDrive for Business and Office365 so hopefully someone can help. I have created a book in Word and want to share it with the pupils. They will need to edit it using Word Online (on Chromebooks) - but they need to take a copy from the Shared area and make it their own - I assume by saving it into their own OneDrive. I cannot see a way of doing this at the moment. Any advice? Many thanks Gareth
Norphy Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 The most obvious way that I can think of would be to download the file from the team site and upload it back to their OneDrive. Can that be done on a Chromebook?
FN-GM Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 Upload it to OneDrive share it with the students with read only permissions, they then copy the file and modify it.

Yes - that is what I want but there doesn't seem to be an option in the OneDrive for Business web site to do that. One would assume you could right click and 'Copy to....' But it isn't there. Gareth

garethEds Posted November 19, 2015 Author Posted November 19, 2015 I have the Copy To option?? Would you have a screenshot I can see? Thanks

garethEds Posted November 19, 2015 Author Posted November 19, 2015 Attached Interesting. here is ours.
garethEds Posted November 19, 2015 Author Posted November 19, 2015 Interesting again - I can do it on files that are created by the user in their own space - but I cannot copy a shared file to create a local cloud copy (if that makes sense). Every child has to have their own copy which originates from the copy the teacher created. So distributing it is the issue. GJE
dezt Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 Have you looked at Teacher Dashboard? I think you can do what you want in that. Copy files to a class of pupils OneDrive for them to complete.

I've just tried it and it stopped me. Aarghghg- why do simple things have to be so tough. Gareth
garethEds Posted November 19, 2015 Author Posted November 19, 2015 Ga - so this is Hwb based? Yes - we are being forced to move everything over to Hwb to save the LEA money. Send me a DM if you want to know more. Gareth
PotNoodleTech Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 I understand what the LEA would want to be doing. We set up our own Office365 because the Hwb is so locked down/castrated/inflexible and we are trying to implement systems here that are flexible and can react to changes what we need rather than what someone else a hundred miles away 'thinks' we need. You can get the Free School Office 365 plan. We're also using Google Classroom for Education as this is such a more refined and easy to use classroom interface for both the teachers and pupils.
mavhc Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 Agreed, sign up for google apps for education, sync ad with gapps, use google classroom, I've been using it for GCSE CS for a year
welshman Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 I am an IT Network Manager at a secondary school in South Wales. Been trying to make Hwb's O365 work the way we need it to work for months. IMHO the platform is not fit for purpose, far too restrictive. 1
garethEds Posted March 13, 2016 Author Posted March 13, 2016 @welshman - Tell me about it. We are not being given the choice. We have our own tenancy, our own mapped drive to OneDrive, SSO etc. But the Headteachers have been sold an idea by the Authority. We have no choice. Gareth 1
welshman Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 (edited) Is your headteacher aware of WAGs Information Governance Guidance for schools which actually specifies that no data that can identify an individual should be stored in O365? Therefore Hwbmail should not be used to send any emails that identify pupils. As data controller your head's head could be on the block if there is a data leak. Edited March 13, 2016 by welshman 2

It's being re-written as we speak by Welsh Government (mentioned in other post as well). Gareth
welshman Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 It's being rewritten, that's convenient The document was only published 6 months ago; I'd be very interested to know what has changed in that time to permit the storage of PERSONAL data in the platform (if that is indeed the amendment that is being made to the document). Let's hope that no data leaks come to light that predate the rewrite of the document!

welshman Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 (edited) maybe a bit cynical. I just find it amazing that such an oversight made it into the document. The document also contradicts itself multiple times which begs the question, was it vetted by legal before publication? If it wasn't I'd be very worried; if it was I'd be equally worried! What's even more concerning is that (in our case at least) there was no attempt by WAG to ensure data controllers were made aware of this document and the guidance within it. I wasn't aware of it until a fortnight ago. I reported the oversight to WAG the day I read (and reread several times in disbelief) the document.......and now I discover it's being rewritten, can you see why I'm a little cynical? I emailed out a survey to all staff here today to get some feedback on the All Wales O365 tenancy, we've been using it since January. Of the responses I've had so far 78% say the email system is worse than the old LEA hosted one; 100% have said it hasn't increased their collaboration with other staff/departments/schools; and only 14% are using OneDrive. I know it's early days but the general feeling here is that the platform is making their lives harder. Edited March 14, 2016 by welshman
Michael Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 Maybe I'm missing something here - you're already using O365 which is free to schools (unless you optionally decide to buy into it) and the Welsh Government want you to move to a centralised model, also free. So where has any money been saved? I appreciate some schools in Wales are probably not using O365, but using a single Tenancy, it just doesn't work. Where's the innovation path if you're all forced to use one and the same? Creating Distribution Groups must also be a nightmare, as well as pupils with the same name/surname. In my view if all e-mail addresses are standardised, you essentially remove the school's identity as @something.net doesn't give you any indication which school it has come from. It just sounds like the Welsh Government have focused on standardisation, cost saving, at the expense of innovation and new technological developments.
welshman Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 Michael, I completely agree. If schools are forced down this route it will stunt innovation. This is especially true in secondary schools, where (no disrespect intended to primary schools) there is usually an IT support team who have the technical know-how to develop a cloud ecosystem that benefits their school. WAG will argue that no school is being forced to use their All Wales O365 tenancy. So if there is somebody reading this who works for or is seconded to WAG to promote the All Wales O365 tenancy, maybe they can clarify if LEAs will be free to support whichever cloud platform schools choose to use without penalty?
