Just purchased a brand new LTO-6 tape drive along with HBA to consolidate the use of 3 backup tapes into 1.

The majority of data (800GB/s) is on a single server and previously I could get this backed up in 4 hours.

With the New LTO-6 backup system it takes 7 hours to backup the same 800GB data so by the time I've added in the data from the other 2 backup drive sources (totalling around 1.2TB it's taking over 14 hours.

 

Over the network the throughput is 1.440.41 MB/minute - just wondered if this is as expected. Both the source server with the 800GB data and the backup server with the LTO drive have 4 x 1GB connections teamed.

 

Just wondered if this transfer speed is as expected for files servers with general day to day small files such as office, pdf, etc.

 

As I was backing up 800GB in 4 hours, (finishing at 1am) it would give me plenty of time to add on the other sources but appears taking longer than I expected.

 

What throughput does anyone else get on LTO tape backups when backing up over the network?

 

If I backup a single remote file of several GB i.e SQL database the speed it ridiculously fast - 4,000MB/Sec. I know smaller files are meant to take longer but didn't know it 1.440.41MB is what is expected?

From what I remember of similar setups, previously, it sounds like much the same speed as I was getting.

 

What backup software you using?

How are the NICs teamed?

And does the switch support teaming?

I'm Using CA Arcserve, and was previously.

The NICS are teamed in Server 2012 R2 (4Gbps bandwidth)

I have also tried LACP and static teaming but never really concluded much difference between them in terms of bandwidth.

 

If the switch supports LACP & Static Teaming, is there a best option to get the maximum available bandwidth?
