Make Windows 10 start menu like Windows 2016's (Multiple folder levels)

Hi all,

 

Has anyone figured out how to stop the Windows 10 start menu making subfolders all appear as one big folder? i.e We have a Departments folder that has subfolders for departments & then their applications. On windows 10 it makes it one big mess under "D" whereas on Windows Server 2016, it keeps the sublevels (See screenshots)

We have the same setup but called subjects, each subject has a staff,pupil, applications shortcut. We notice this issue also and I think it's not solvable as yet. But would be interested to know when it will be fixed.

Isn't this is why we have search?

Yes, but search is just part of it. The user would have to know what they are after, rather than just looking through folders & seeing what we have

Top of the staff and student shared areas have a folder called 1.applications

 

in there have your folders and all your shortcuts.

 

create a shortcut in the startmenu as a Tile... maybe this will work?

Classic Shell is still worth a look if you want more customisation. It's freeware and has some configurable options. Classic Shell • View topic - Apply start menu settings and customizations to All Users

Alternative shells are not the right way to go, we really need to put pressure on Microsoft to revert it back to how it always been.

It actually depends on the requirements. I agree that my first choice is not third party software but however if you can't achieve what you need with the built-in tools, this is a good third party alternative.

I admit, I'm tempted to deploy the LTSB release with classic start installed.

I'm also experiencing this merger of department sub folders within subjects redirected folder. I will be watching out for any fix or update this tread if I find a fix.

Its unlikely to be fixed so we have two options but this seems the best we can come up with so far....

 

make the Subjects folder a link to a folder, so it opens in an explorer window.

I gave up, put Departments in the main folder & put the folders I wanted to appear at the top of the start menu by adding a # in front of them, so # Multimedia software

It's not great, but it'll do - 99% of what people want anyway is pinned to the start screen bit (Office, adobe, SIMS)
