Outlook 2016 with Exchange 2010

I am just enquiring as to whether anybody knows of any problems likely to occur from moving to Outlook 2016 from Outlook 2016 while using an Exchange 2010 server?

 

I have carried out 1 test install of Office 2016 on my own machine and Outlook still worked but when doing so for a member of teaching staff I could not get Outlook 2016 to create a profile.

 

I'm wondering if there are some necessary steps to configure the server? I read that there is no longer an option to manually configure settings for Outlook 2016 as it relies on auto-discover but this has always worked for Outlook 2010 here.

We haven't changed anything for Outlook 2016, just pushed it out and so far nobody has complained (or they forgot where we are and how to use a phone, so can't complain they can't get into their emails)

It's an interesting question, but bearing in mind O365 is still essentially Exchange 2013, and this works fine with Outlook 2016.

 

Did you see any error messages when it was unable to create the profile?

Apologies I've just noticed an error in my first post, I meant to say I'm trying to move from Office 2010 (Outlook 2010) to Office 2016 (Outlook 2016) and our Exchange server is 2010.

 

I got the errors described here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3098831 which is where I got the clue about auto-discover but as I say Outlook 2010 is using auto-discover to setup the profiles now so I find it hard to believe this is the problem.

 

Could it be linked to permissions in any way?

Did you install Outlook 2016 over an existing Outlook 2010 install, or is it a clean install?

On my PC where it is working I uninstalled Office 2010 and installed Office 2016 so I followed the same steps on the 2nd PC but had the problems described.

 

Then I did try installing it as an upgrade but still had the same problems.

If you image a workstation with Office 2016, so Office 2010 was never on it, does it work? Just wondering if old/left over information, such as the user profile is the problem or the device itself.

I don't know how it behaves on a fresh image but I will test it.

 

I have however used a new laptop which my test user has never logged on to because I thought maybe it was related to the Outlook 2010 profile on his devices but I still had the same errors having installed Office 2016 and logging him on for the first time.
