Printer monitoring

Hi all,

 

Friday at last!!!!!!

 

I would like something that displays all our Toshiba printers toner levels, waste bottle level, belt life etc on one page. I have looked at some programs but none of them seem capable of doing this. I have seen a couple of people have done this on Linux using Python and a html script to call on the python program. I am just trying to learn Python to try to do this myself, but before I did I wanted to know if anybody had any other ideas? Is Python and html the best way to go? Any guides on how to do this ?

 

As I am new to programming (though I have dabbled), I thought this could be a good project to start with.

Systems like Nagios will do it, you just need to interegate the MIB data to get the value for which thing you want to be alerted on.

Would something like Nagios show everything on one page? Any opinions on the better systems? Free would be preferable.

Depends on how its configured, I used Zenoss to monitor toner levels and paper trays a few years ago but not something I've touched since then. I asked it to alert when things were below a certain %.

You can setup a nagios status page that pulls data from nagios and displays warnings and urgent issues on that page. Most additions like that are freely available but it does take some time to set it up for every device since you need to update the config files for each new device/service your monitoring.

We use nagios for monitoring servers & switches and it's great, printers will monitor but we have papercut doing this job
