You can run Veeam on a physical server - no need to have a specific virtual host for it.

Thanks, Does it need to be a good spec server?, obviously the more storage the better

It needs to be a decent spec though it doesn't need to be a new server. it use to max out my old AMD Operon Quad core - it doesn't max out a second hand 8 Core Xeon. Make sure you got 8GB+ ram just incase, I have 12. Other than that - FILL IT WITH DISKS!!!!

Hi,

I am currently looking to replace DPM 2012 with Veeam backup essentials V9, the price is good but I'm struggling to find info about how it backs up to tape. Basically as well as backing up to disk storage we would like to do a weekly tape backup for off site storage.

What i cant seem to pin down is can you browse the tapes for file level recovery? from what i have read it just writes the files the disk backup produces. Anyone able to fill in the blanks here?

You have two options.

If you're backing up your VM backups to tape, they will be written to the tape as backup files. In order to restore file-level from these, you need to restore the backup file onto disk, then restore the required file from it.

If you're backing up files-to-tape, you can browse the tapes and restore file-level from them.

I have both; my backups are on tape as backup files, but I've also file-level backups of various files/folders that I want quicker access to such as SIMS backups.
