POE and POE+

Hi,

 

Possibly a dim question, looking at getting some new AP's in that require POE+. The switches I have provide POE and aren't powerful enough.

 

Can I put a POE+ injector on a cable run that is already POE or is it going to damage something? Would the original POE damage the injector?

Erm, it shouldn't do.

 

What switches do you have? You can disabled POE on the port just to be sure?

 

For Cisco add this setting to the port - power inline never

Interesting question - the connection between a switch delivering PoE and an injector won't deliver PoE, but only data. The switch will autosense what's connected, but you should be able to see this from the web console to confirm it.

 

The injector itself will then of course add the required PoE+ power, which is something in the range of 25w vs PoE's 15w (top of my head). Not a great deal in it.

 

I presume you've tried the APs as some will work perfectly fine with both PoE or PoE+.
