MattCowen Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Hi Guys Our HT has just purchased a HP 4280c All in one printer FOR HOME but can't get it to install. So he's brought it in to school for me to look at, as if I didn't have enough to do. I'm also stuck so rather tan waste a lot of time thought I would ask you lot. When I run the setup program it hangs when I'm told to connect the printer via USB. Add new hardware wizard runs and gives the message 'Cannot install specified port is unavaliable' Any ideas? PS XP Pro System Cheers in advance
Joanne Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 you tried plugging in the printer then going to device manager and installing the driver that way? saves on all the farce with the hp software. or download the driver?
contink Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Few things to try. 1. Make sure the USB ports are actually working (try a pendrive) and if not check BIOS 2. Try a different USB port 3. Try a different USB cable (sometimes they're just faulty) 4. Have an accident with a large fridge like object landing on the printer... Oops

Oops LOL @ 4. system restore to before the nutter (sorry) user tried to install it incorrectly then actually do what the setup instructions say?

I think it's some sort of USB relateed problem as when I plug my usb drive in it starts with the add new hardware wizard too and I have to restart machine before I can access the drive? Looks like I'll have to see how high this laptop will bounce.
TechMonkey Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 check on the HP site for better drivers. I was pleasantly suprised last week when installing a printer to find the option of a drivers only package! Horrah! May cut out some of the crud.
Geoff Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 The printer might be trying to pull more power than allowed via the USB. Laptops can be fussy about this and disable the out-of-spec hardware.

Laptops can be fussy about this and disable the out-of-spec hardware. agree with you on that one, make sure the power cable for the laptop is connected and turned on and works ( obviously ) Also you could try and get a usb hub that is powered and see if that helps at all ?

crc-ict Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Have you tried removing ALL the usb devices from Device Manager, restarting, waiting for them to redetect and install the drivers, then have another go? I had a similar problem with the memory sticks on an HP laptop and this sorted it.

High spec HP machine - 18 months old - never had any maintenance other than widows update from what I can see. I've booted in safe Mode and it's doing Disk Cleanup for the next few hours (it's been going for 2 already)... CCleaner's next and after that it'll have to be the spyware and a defrag. It's not my problem, but... At least it's in such an awful state I can do my job while it's sitting chuntering in the corner!
