Filtered Internet

Hi All

 

Looking for advise on this one, we have a accommodation that is in the middle of the welsh mountains and is used to take our students on trips etc. We are finally getting round to adding some internet and while the accomadation is used for the occasional holiday let to i need to think of a way to have filtered internet and non filtered internet.

 

Anyone got any ideas.

Just an idea, there are a few wireless routers out there that have parental filters built in, maybe you could find one that provides a good enough level for your students. Then set it up to transmit two SSID's one with filtering enable one without.

Give the password for the one with it enabled to your students and the one without filtering enabled to you holiday guests?

Sorry I have never done this myself so cant advise you on one to buy but maybe give you an idea where to look.

Not sure what coverage would be like up there but I remember @SchoolsBroadband offering 3G dongles that connected to their filtering systems - might be worth getting in touch.

Depending on the quality of your school's existing connection, you could VPN the traffic back to the school and use your normal filtering system. Obviously only works if your school has a decent amount of upstream bandwidth.

I suspect the middle of the welsh mountains won't be too good for 3G or 4G

 

You could by a satellite connection to do the job of Internet then using opendns.com to do filtering foc if you needed something cheap and cheerful? If you wanted a full solution we could use an EoIP tunnel back to our core network and you could have our Lightspeed filtering but it'd cost a bit more than the free opendns.com

You could always stick a PC in running Untangle to filter everything.

 

That's what we've done on a separate line that comes into school for our 6th Formers to run BYOD. It works perfectly, and you can set up user accounts, blocklists and so on.

 

It'll only cost you a basic PC and two NICs.

Sophos do a free software version of their UTM for home use with great filtering - same features as the full hardware version I believe... Worth checking out

VPN would be my option or the Open DNS if you have a static IP on that line you can tie it down more I think.

A small iboss unit might be an idea or indeed a small unit from any vendor such as Cyberoam, Sonicwall etc etc.
