Joanne Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 So I've just installed me a new shiny 2012 R2 VM. I want to use it as KMS activation host. To do this I need to upgrade my schema to 2012. Can I do this now? Should I do it at night? Will it affect users in any way whilst it's doing its thang?

Joanne Posted October 21, 2015 Author Posted October 21, 2015 OK I have a 2008 R2 DC with all the roles and SIMS. I've installed this 2012 R2 VM so I can KMS activate Windows 10 and hopefully have more in the way of Group Policy. Eventually I want to migrate everything over to 2012 R2, but now is not the time. I think I'll promote it to a DC one evening to be super sure! Thanks for advice.
sted Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 will 2012r2 kms windows 10? id be tempted to just create a windows 10 vm for kmsing clients as that definately will (same as in schools with 2008r2 if i want to activate windows 8.1 i just set up an 8.1 kms server (also means i can just move it from host to host if needed)

KMS keys have to be added by MS these days, so it's either a phone call or an e-mail (phone call is normally much faster) why i dont need them now granted but still ill see if i can dig out an email address and see if they will do multiple at once (ive got about 8-9 schools on my vlsc login)

For the keys I hvae just logged into our volume licensing account and we have our KMS keys listed in there. Do you have access to the VLSC at all? Might be worth getting access if you dont as it's incredibly useful. As for AD. I'm almost certain that adding a new DC won't automatically raise the functional domain level. We've got Server 2012 DCs and we're still running @ 2008r2. Finally... I've done ADSchema upgrades before for things like SCCM. In theory it adds a few new object types and attributes in AD. So in reality it should be safe to do whenever but it's irreversible save for a full forest recovery. So should always make sure you have a recent backup! We've got Server 2012 DCs and we're still running @ 2008r2. We haven;t bothered to update our forest from 2008r2 yet either. If it needs it I'll raise it for the new security group functionality of 2016 but otherwise we don't need to use any of the more recent features.

My first two thoughts would be you either haven;t installed the role or you still have a mak installed on the server you want to be a kms server (as it needs to have its kms key - the public one for clients)
