synaesthesia Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Has anyone had any experience of MLS's Reading Cloud? Our librarian has been looking at it, MLS's webinar wasn't particularly well delivered apparently yet getting a guest login for another school she appears to like it. However she doesn't have access to the management side of things. Would like to know if anyone has some experience and could let me know if it directly replaces Eclipse, what the management interface is like, if MLS have gotten out of the 90s regarding AD authentication yet etc. Cheers

pcstru Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I think we did have a trial of this. We asked a couple of teachers to have a look and let us know if they thought it would be useful ... which they did by not letting us know (meaning it obviously wasn't).
Sylv3r Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I saw it at BETT and liked the look of it, but I couldn't guarantee that it would get used as ultimately the librarian needs to drive it's use. We are a self-hosted school and I don't think it works if your self-hosted, I must admit I've seen a lot of feedback with regards to Eclipse on this forum, but as a self hosted school we've had very little issues, and we've got AD and access to the iOS app all working fine. I do however agree, that sometimes when I need to speak to support it sometimes takes a while to speak to someone, but I certainly don't have it on my list as one of the worst pieces of software we use thats for sure.

I'm just very wary of Reading Cloud being the same as Eclipse, i.e. put in place when Noah was rounding up his Apple users 2 by 2. However the AD sync seems to have improved since I last looked 3/4 years ago but I haven't finished yet. I still don't understand why they don't have a simple authentication setup like, well, anything else on the planet. If open source stuff like Moodle can handle it, regardless of where it's hosted, why the hell can't a library system >:|

I will add that ours was fine until we moved to the silverlight version (at the ex-librarians insistance) that's when it all went badly!
