Afternoon everyone,

We were having a lot of bandwidth issues and after some digging I found that Phobos.apple.com service was using all our bandwidth. Kindly Aurthur in one of my posts mentioned to setup a caching server. I have bought OS X server 5 and installed it on our Mac mini, ran the cache service which shows the following

Host name.local

Computer name

Internet: reachable on this public IP, no services available.

Now the reach ability details showing green light and it resolves the IP but how can I find out if any of my downloads are being cached? For the past 6 hrs of running it says no services available. Am I doing something wrong? I can access the Internet and I did download some updates including El Capitan but I cannot see how our iOS devices and other macs are using caching service or not?

Under permissions I have clicked only local subsets and matching this server network. Do I have to do anything else to make it work ?

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Kindest regards

Public static I.P. for the server....?

Well it says reaching to "this" public IP so I am guessing it is resolving to it. I have given static IP on our internal network. I have also added it with its MAC address under DHCP static route. I didn't set any reverse DNS or any a record for it though.

Is the apple server on the same subnet as your iMacs and iPads?

Go into stats on server and check your caching stats. It will show what's been downloading.

Also on cache in the server part should show how much of the space is used with what type of updates.

I've set it to cache everything with the same public IP address as all our devices leave with that same ip.

Thank you for a quick reply Marshall. Yes it is under the same subnet. I went into stat and it only showed one high peak of 2mb and nothing else after that. The drive showed 1TB available. I will check it again on Monday.

I'll try to remember to check my setting on Monday. PM me if I don't post them by lunchtime and I'll send them to you.

Do your LA use a pool of public I.P.'s ?

You will require a public static I.P. that only you can use, otherwise other schools that share this will start getting some major problems with their iOS devices trying to download updates from your caching server.

More info about configuring and checking caching logs in the guide below..

Thanks Brimstone for a quick reply. You've raised a good point. I don't know if LA uses pool of public IPs but I can certainly send a request to SWG to set a public IP and point it to our static internal IP that I set for our cache server.

The public ip of your caching server needs to be the same as all of your apple devices for it to work.

Since the server is on the same network and same subnet I am guessing it has the same public IP as our other devices but I will check it on Monday just to be sure.

FYI with the newer version of OSX server(2014+) its possible to specify a public IP range to be served so the server no longer needs to be on the same public IP address, this does however require an additional DNS record on the internal dns server. having issues setting this all up myself at the moment but hoping the dns entry will sort it.

To set this up click edit permissions on the caching server section - if required the dns entry will be available on the edit permissions dialog.

I use the following settings.

All Networks

matching This server's public IP address.

Thanks Marshall_IT I came to the office this morning and cache server had used 7.9GB so far and it states iOS software. What's the difference between all networks and only local subnets?

Thanks for a quick reply Jammann, I wanted to get caching server up and running so we can consume less bandwidth, it seems to be working. I also enabled software update but later found out that software update requires a DNS configure. I haven't done that and left caching server to server.local.

Well I only use local subnet instead of all networks option. It has started to work and cache has built up to 12GB and most of it 99% is made up of iOS and nothing else. The idea is to save capped bandwidth we have as when I start updating iOSs or download apps or apps updates through Meraki it brings the entire network down. It happened today as well but then my guess is, it is because cache hasn't been built for certain apps.

Maybe I have spoken too early? Although the cache has been built up to 20GB I don't think it is actually working. Well my doubts are because I must have downloaded three iOS apps 100 times by now but each time I install it onto the new iPad it drags the entire internet bandwidth. I don't understand why it's doing this, although the server shows reach iliac and all iPads and the server are using same public IP. I tried using all networks option but that didn't help either.

Ok looking at the logs for caching I have noticed the following error message

Oct 16 11:28:44 "server" AssetCache[1351]: #w0akDo0W3OD Request by "itunestored/1.0" for http://IP:50067/us/r1000/174/purple6/v4....dpkg.ipa?source=a1865.phobos.apple.com denied because server is suspended pending successful registration.

Have no idea what it means

Any further help will be much appreciated.

Now it says

Registration succeeded. Resuming server.

The startup status is ok, registration status is 1 active is yes cache status ok

Why the caching server keep getting failed all of a sudden and then takes quite a long time to register again with Apple? Should I change the caching server port to 80?

Sick and tired of caching server, stuck on so certificate and registration failure for the whole day now. Really annoying, status is Pending all day long no matter what I do it doesn't move from that status. Grrrrrr
