russdev Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Head saw me today been told that concern about letting data go off site (after all data breeches recently). Anyway talking about backups and suggested that we have remote backup that way I do not need to take tapes off site etc can be left in fireproof safe. While still going off site theory is less likely to fall into wrong hands. So need suggestions on companies that do remote backup solutions this will beed to backup 2 Windows 2003 Servers (RM CC3) 1 Windows 2003 Server (RM Member - sims server) Maybe if space few other bits. Cant be a diy job as it has to go right off site so any suggestions. Russ
Sylv3r Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 We have 2 seperate sites and I backup to a Disk 2 Disk 2 Tape backup system at the other site from the servers. This works pretty well. RM offer a remote backup service but they is a limit to the amount of space that is backed up. http://www.rm.com/Secondary/Products/Product.asp?cref=PD586646&Position=12
Guest Guest Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Our LA are currently setting up remote backup for all schools in the area who want it. Maybe worth seeing if there are enough schools around you who would want this and then all club in together. Obviously the initial outlay is alot, but long term you will be quids in. My only concern is the infrastructure as 100mb/s isnt actually that much when you have several servers to back up, but that concern is there regardless of where the data is stored.
CyberNerd Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 My only concern is the infrastructure as 100mb/s isnt actually that much when you have several servers to back up, but that concern is there regardless of where the data is stored. There is a solution to this, by using snapshot style rsync backups you can get away with only going a 'full' backup once. every other backup is technically just an incremental - but still holds a full backup. This way you only ever sync what has been changed on the day of the backup. It also takes up a lot less space as it uses hardlinks. (you still need to transfer all the data once, of course). heres a nice into: http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/
Busybub Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 You can buy a hardware encrypted USB drive for less than 100 quid. Even if you bought 3 or 4 for rotation it'll work out cheaper than an annual, commercial, offsite solution. We use two for weekly swaps, never had an issue yet
russdev Posted January 15, 2008 Author Posted January 15, 2008 Issue is members of staff taking it off site to be honest been trying to get them to do some kind of remote backup for a while this has just pushed them into doing it.
CyberNerd Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Have you looked at S3? http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html?node=16427261 It's essentially an external virtual server
