Yeh Network Access Protection and IPv6, which is what I wanted to look at in the first place. gonna be fun trying to remember those, gone the days of oh yeh it's 192.168.25.93 and in come the days of...oh yeah the ip address is 2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:1428:57ab...

 

Trouble with DHCP that causes the problem is the client just issues an 'is anyone there command' and will take any offers it gets...like an Essex girl on a Friday night...

I remember when I installed it on a test machine in the office.

 

Was having a look and play with DHCP then moved on to something else.

 

Came in the next day and half the school couldn't find the network. Reason? They were getting addresses from the Server 2008 box. Beware.

 

It was that problem that started me worrying about the fact any DHCP server plugged in to your network can give out addresses...the possibilites for disruption...

 

Haha Ive done that before too, while trying out something or other

Learnt my lesson and everything is well and truly isolated from the school network now :p

thought with IPv6, consecutive 0's could be remvoed so your example of

 

2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:1428:57ab

 

would become

 

2001:0db8:::::1428:57ab ?

 

or something like that..

Even if you can, the reason they're there is becasue they could be something else, was just an example of the length and structure more than anything.

 

Just think instead of 4 lots of 3 numbers, you'll have to jot down 8 lots of 4 hex digits!

which is why i usually avoid IPv6 - until its needed...

 

BTW, this is a good Wiki article on IPv6 for those who wish to delve deeper into the nightmare world of IPv6 since it seems to have a lot of support in Windows 2008...

Funny, the string in the article is identical to mine...wonder how that happened...hehe...

 

I guess 2008 needs support really as no matter if you like it or not, IPv6 is the future.

And as always, most apps dont like IPv6 as yet... Not got much use for it at present so sticking with IPv4

 

BTW, what happend to IPv1 thru IPv3 and IPv5 ?

Version numbers 0 through 3 were development versions of IPv4 used between 1977 and 1979. Version number 5 was used by the Internet Stream Protocol (IST), an experimental stream protocol. Version numbers 6 through 9 were assigned to experimental protocols designed to replace IPv4: SIPP (known nowadays as IPv6), TP/IX, PIP, and TUBA. Of these, only IPv6 is still in use.

Oh yes Network Access Protection, this looks to be an interesting set of technologies. I think from what i've read that this can be implemented in a 2003 Active Directory as long as you have one 2008 server running the NAP service.

 

Anyone else read that?

Pretty much like a VPN on ISA from what i remember.

 

You can set parameters that computers must meet to join your network, ie OS, Virus program up to date, Firewalled etc.. and until the computer meets your settings it will be denied or given limited access as you choose.

 

There was an online Microsoft eLearning ages ago when Vista came out.

I'm pretty sure it's policy based and uses some kind of agent.

 

I can't see how it manages to isolate the client if it's joined to the physical network unless it forces it into an IP segment with only update servers on untill it meets the requirements.

I'm playing with Server 2008, and I see alot of new policies (obviously ones that say 'requires Vista' won't work with XP) - my question is that several of the other features (the preferences folder in GPMC springs to mind) - would these work on XP SP2 or are they Vista only?

 

If they are Vista only, then the reasoning for us to go Server 2008 just dropped considerably, but if not - I see an upgrade coming. :)

They do work with Windows XP but...

 

You need a ClientSide Extension, which, AFAIK, wont be available until Windows 2008 goes to RTM..
