Ofsted are in today and tomorrow, cue mass panic on site. We've been asked to install 4Matrix to all teacher computers which is done, however staff need full access rights to the folder. I thought it was simply sorted by GPO - Computer config - windows settings - file system and adding the path/setting permissions... But it’s not working. Am I missing something really obvious?

We too have been having problems which I thought I had sorted, apparently the software when installed creates a folder called "Temp" which it installs 7Zip decompiler and the users have to have full permissions to run this software as this is what it uses to install the updates,

I did create file rules which allowed the users to run this and it worked a treat but ever since for whatever reasons it no longer doesn't want to work now, still looking into it as we speak.

I really love software which runs smoothly don't you? ;)

It works as a admin (full control of the C drive) I've looked in the logs and it just states the GPO has been applied (which it clearly hasn't).

@bossman Yes, to be fair it installed great, it just won't open!

I have just ran as a test user and found out the reason why, it seems each update is a simple self extraction file which installs the updated files to the directory which the program is installed and overwrites the previous ones, each 7zip extraction file has a different version and this is why it will not run for us as I had set the rule to run just the exe of the first update Doh!

Will have to work out how I can allow each incremental version to run with a file rule as I already have the path rule for that folder allowed!

Ohh such fun with good software! ;)

Just in talks with 4Matrix atm, hopefully I have made them aware allowing users local admin rights to run the updates is not feasible as it presents a security risk, I did create Folder and file permissions and it did work on the first update but as the updates are incremental numbered versions it is not a good solution, if the update had a specific name then it would be easy to set a file rule up to allow the users to run that executable from the temp folder within the 4Matrix program files.

Also the temp folder updates do not delete after running so we are going to end up with an awful lot of update files in there which will have to be cleaned out so this would be another reason for having just a names update file which would overwrite the previous one when it had been installed,

They are going to get back to me :)

Hello

It will always be better to use our support options to find solutions to any technical problems which may arise when using 4Matrix.

We will usually sort out problems like this in minutes.

Don't you just configure the Network Manager on the server with credentials for clients that don't have access to update, i.e. any standard user? Works flawlessly here.

Done this and still no joy at the moment,

This is why I am talking to the technical people at 4Matrix

It maybe that I have stricter security policies in force on the network than others and this could be one of the reasons, but we will find out,

Thanks for your input though appreciated :)

I gather it works fine if you're logged in as an admin? You'd have thought if you set the Network Manager to an account with similar permissions then it would work. I'd be interested to know what is the problem when you find a solution.

Well all sorted now thanks to one of 4Matrix developers called "Chris"

Created a Launcher XML file which allows the standard user to install the updates, works like a charm!

Thank you Chris :)

Is this a launcher specific to your site, or can it be used elsewhere?

We don't tend to have a problem, but every now and again we do get users prompted for an administrative password just to even get to the 'Checking for updates' stage.

I don't think it is specific for our network, it is required for us as I have the network really tightly screwed down and this doesn't allow the users to run exe's from their appdata folder as part of their profile,

I did create path and file rules but as the updates were incremental everytime an update was available I would have to create a new file rule which really wasn't productive,

Anyway if you are having a problem I would definitely ring them as their support is excellent :)
