Hi

want to make sure we are legal.

We have an open evening on the 6th October and our PE department wants to stream the live rugby for our visitors.

Will my TV licence and my ERA+ Licence cover us for this.

Thanks

Matt

Looking at the ERA licence I would suggest not.

The licence uses the term "non-commercial educational purposes", Which an open evening wouldn't automatically be covered also later on in the guidance it says;

"Showing recordings for entertainment purposes, whether or not the audience has made a payment or donation to see the performance" which I think is the more likely reason which is explicitly excluded from the licence.

I would add I'm no expert and just took a look at the ERA guidance.

I don't see how you are covered for that - showing the rugby live is not educationally linked, it's a public broadcast which comes under a whole 'nother licence isn't it?

Mind you - if you've got it in writing then it's fine I guess you're covered!

From the tv licencing website

http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/business-and-organisations/hospitality-aud11

Hospitality areas need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if any staff or customers watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV. This includes the use of devices such as a TV, computer, mobile phone, games console, digital boxor DVD/VHS recorder.

A hospitality area is any premises, other than a hotel, that provides rooms, corporate boxes or other similar places (units) for guests’ entertainment at an event - for instance, a sports stadium, club or ground (e.g. rugby, football, golf, tennis). Your licence fee will be based on the number of units in which a TV receiver is installed or used.

And:

How much does it cost?

To cover up to 15 units

You only need to pay one fee of £145.50
