I am trying to RIS a machine i have had no problems at all in the past. I come this morning i enable network boot in the BIOS. The system restarts and gets as far as the

 

CLIENT MAC ADDRESS: xx xx xx xx xx xx xx

 

and stalls.

 

I have reset the bios

Restarted the RIS server

Checked all the settings

 

Any Ideas

I dont think it is a Network Connection as i have tried it on three machines.

Hows your DHCP server, I think that RIS uses PXE boot which requires the DHCP server to be up and running and providing the location of a TFTP server (RIS in this case) to provide the boot image.

 

I think that if the DHCP is out or the RIS TFTP is down it will not be able to boot into RIS.

 

You could test the DHCP on the clients by doing an ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew on one of the affected machines once in Windows. Assuming that they are running Windows

Yes the DHCP is running fine i have just restarted but still nothing

Could be the TFTP component then I'm not sure as I don't use RIS but you could try restarting the RIS service and checking for odd entries in the event log.

Are all the clients that you have tried in a similar location or on a similar switch?

 

Can you ping the RIS and DHCP servers from another client in that location?

 

Also are you the only tech? Is it possible that someone has installed SP2 if it's a 2k3 server?

Yes i can ping servers and restasrted tftp but still stuck at MAC Address.

Check the ris is OK by using the Remote Installation services Setup Wizard and then use the check the server for errors option.

 

This should then restart any services that may have failed and also authorize the server with the DHCP server

Is RIS an authorised DHCP Server still

We had this with ghost, it was our motherboards. They where mass produced with the same Mac address something like that. The manufacturer supplied us with a floppy to give each board there own unique Mac address.
