OS X Yosemite (Print Deployment)

Afternoon all.

 

Run into abit of a problem, we've got 200 Macs/Macbooks, Konica recently installed some MFD's for us, but they didn't complete the setup for the MAC side. So I've decided to do it myself. Printer and driver has been installed on the MAC Server and I've shared it. However, after hours of searching the net I can't seem to find a good guide/tutorial on how to now push this printer to all of my Macs.

 

I believe the application you use is called Workgroup Manager and then select Preferences, this is part I am getting stuck at.

Profile manager Workgroup manager was depreciated a few releases ago (around 10.6/10.7 I think). The replacement is called profile manager and is part of the server app on the mac app store. This has a section for setting up printers (plus a load of other settings too).

 

There are other MDM solutions such as Jamf casper, but I've only recently started experimenting with server.app/profile manager so can't comment on the other MDM services

You can still use WGM, but if you're starting fresh I would recommend PM now.

Is that just a case of playing with PM, or do you know a method to deploy a printer using PM?

I don't use PM here, we've got WGM working in 10.10 so still using it. In WGM, the printer is set as a shared printer for the group of PCs selected (you have to add them to a group, as we also add AD users so that we can manage their Preferences). I imagine that PM is very similar.

Use the lock on the top right to unlock it to have access to editing your settings. That said, if you are connecting to another directory and not the OD on the server then you may have issues saving changes.

Agree! If you are starting from Scratch I would run with PM.

 

This is the first year myself going full out with Munki and PM. PM pushes out the settings for the printers to all of our labs.
