So we have one of these in our hall. The image has started to go really dim, and I am wondering whether to buy a new bulb which will be around £160. or should I see if I can find the money and replace the unit. Anyone any ideas,

We'd probably buy a bulb at that price.

Generally we buy bulbs for less than 6year old projectors. After 6 years if the bulb goes we replace the unit but it depends on how much a replacement would be and the time of year.

Personally? Unless it's less than 4 years old, I'd buy a new unit. The cog on the mirror motor is notorious for breaking. We've had every single one of the 13 units we bought replaced under warranty at least once, and some 2 or 3 times. I give Hitachi their due, though. They admitted it was a genuine design flaw and agreed to extend their warranty to 5 years for this model and this issue only. All of ours are now outside even the extended warranty so, when the next lamp goes, we're going to replace the whole projector.

Hi @Chrisbf1 if you can get the funds to replace the projector there are some really good alternatives that would be worth looking at. The question I would ask is do you still need a short throw projector as if not then this opens you up to even more projectors. For halls I generally would recommend Epson, NEC and Panasonic.

More than happy to offer advice and specs on new a projector.
