hello, my school would like to give students access to email in school but in a safe way. we already use 365 for staff but want to introduce it to pupils too. is there a way of locking it down so the student group can only email other students and not go outside of the domain?

many thanks

yes you can set any user or group permissions so they can only email internally You can even add exceptions to that if needed to say a partner school etc

Go into your Exchange admin center and then under Mail Flow and Rules.

You should be able to use the rule options available to achieve exactly what you're after. :)

Edit: In our case it helps we use a different domain name for our student accounts.

Another common request (along the same lines) is to prevent/restrict pupils e-mailing Staff Distribution Groups. Again you can do this by applying rules. Exchange Server is very strong in this area and is quite flexible.

The options you need are 'If an email is sent to/ received from Outside the organization [sic]'. I've set 'Do the following' to 'Prepend the subject with 'Blocked Mail' and redirect the message to [account]@[domain], so that I audit any failed attempts, but you can choose to do what you like.

Is there any function to block profanity or anything along those lines? Just in case Pupil A decides to tell Pupil B where to go!!

Nope. Its just a hosted exchange system. To do that you would need a third party product of some kind.

You can do a basic version of this by creating a mail flow rule, you will need to enter the keywords yourself though ('Subject or Body contains any of the following words..').
