DNS Server Not Responding

We have two networks in the school I work in. One for the whole school which is curriculum and the other is just for the admin teams. The curriculum network computers are not working due to them all have an IP address from the admin server which doesn't make sense at all. The message I keep receiving from the server on the curriculum side is 'The DNS server isn't responding'. Any ideas for a quick fix?

Are all the DHCP settings on the curriculum server sound? They're not dishing out the wrong DNS?

All absolutely fine

So am I correct in thinking you have a DHCP server on the curriculum network AND a DHCP server on the admin network? Are the networks physically separate?

Yes the networks are both completely delegate with separate servers

you sure someone hasnt "cross wired" them?(or a switch hasnt lost its vlan config) as there has to be some link somewhere for a curric pc to get an admin lease

The curriculum network shouldn't be able to get an IP from the Admin server. I have the same setup

Has anyone touched a switch lately?

Can you switch off the admin server (at lunch perhaps?) and see if the curriculum side recovers?

Yeah it sounds like there could be a cross wire or switch config issue... any recent power outages?

No power outages. As far as I know nobody has touched any of the switches. I am going to turn off the admin server when possible to see if i can get things back up and running

id be tempted as its not working anyway to plug your server(s) into 1 switch and just plug 1 pc into that see if that pc gets a lease (either use a 8 spare switch or unplug everything else)

You haven't got the wrong dns server settings being applied by GPO / GPP etc ?

All the Dns settings are correct. It has gone down overnight

try renewing the lease on a client and see what comes up

 

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

Now the admin server is off I have correct ip addresses on the curriculum networked computers

Must be a cross-connection somewhere. Does an external company support the admin network?

Yes we do have a company who do work on the admin server

There are several things that come to mind here -

 

- You have two network domains, but is there a trust in place or not?

- Are the two networks on the same or different subnets?

- Do you have VLANs in place?

Now getting correct IP addresses but no internet access. The message displaying now on the main curriculum server is 'DHCP is not enabled for local area connection 4'
