How much storage space do you give photography (GCSE) students?

Morning all,

 

Due to excessive data piling up I have introduced quotas this year for all students. Currently year 7 - 9 get 2gb each and Year 10 and 11 get 5gb each which I believe is incredibly generous. All students also get Google drive with unlimited space.

 

Our photography teacher has voiced her concerns that this isn't enough space for students taking GCSE photography and she wants their limits removed..

The main problem last year was caused by photography students dumping files on the system meaning I had issues with actually running out of space or backup issues.

 

I was wondering what others do?

We have a separate mapped drive for Photography students. All their work gets saved in there rather then their own work area.

We have a shared area for them which is about 150GB however with the introduction of Google Photos this year, I am starting to reduce this and make policy for students to use their areas for current work and archiving older items on Google Photos as it allows them to create groups, view them easily, and download quickly should they need them for examiners.

I used to give them 10GB and got moaned at for that too.

We set a limit like so

Year 7: 500MB

Year 8: 1GB

Year 9: 2GB

Year 10+11: 5GB

Year 12+13: 10GB

 

Our photography and media students get 10GB to start with (I get a class list), then if they get the warning they tell their teacher and I raise it up. It depends what year and what course they are doing, one student last year did a lot of video work and used 100GB while editing, once he had the final work he deleted the raw data and only used 20GB.

 

We have 16TB for user documents. The backup server has 32TB. We do a full backup then incremental after this.

 

At the end of the day, IF the students really need the space for their course then the school needs to provide it, even if that means spending money on more storage. We had a meeting about it when we started photography and they ended up giving me a few thousand pound to get more storage as that is what was needed. Of course future proofing with the money as we only use 4TB for documents at the moment.

Photography is only done at A level here, they each get access to a separate mapped drive. The photography folder for the past 5 years or Y12 +13 totals about 800GB at the moment, they aren't quota'd, as unfortunately no matter how much i try and tell them they just won't listen when it comes to re sizing those ridiculously large images.

This... When will you need to print a 10 meter image? They might... Never have I seen anything printed bigger than A3. Half of the images they never open again, and 50% are the same image. But if they pay for the server, I'm not bothered.

We do have an A1 printer, but even then that's only used specifically for work they've ensured is FINAL on their end of year work.....which is often made up of combinations of lots of images they've taken and never one single image anyway. It's SO frustrating.

 

The photography teacher is the least interested person i've ever known to actually actioning something you've told him. I've asked him tons of times to delete the old years photography work. We still have work going back to 2011 in there....it's just not needed! I've said that i can archive it off if he tells me what can be moved and i'll just move it to our crappy little backup SAN but the guy is just so unresponsive to requests. I haven't gone as far as taking it up the chain though (never have the damn time >_<) but next time it's quiet and i'm tidying up i think i may well do that now that this thread has reminded me.
