Via Freecycle, I have been in contact with a man called Michael Foulkes (012380 652047) who lives in Eastleigh, Hampshire and refurbishes computers for the needy. He will travel a reasonable distance from there (and has a contact living in Salisbury who could collect for him) for machines and can wipe them etc if needed. He will take my old 700Hz machines so we are talking pretty old stuff here!:)

If you have got any old kit and are fairly near him, give him a ring.

I wish we could do stuff like that, under BSF and coporatly we have to send ours to be professionally disposed of for data security etc. It's a real shame, as other people could use them, where talking Optiplex GX250's to 270's here.

Another example of BSF wastage, considering the latest (Dec2007) regulations are encouraging both charitable and commercial re-use of ICT equipment.

The regulations go so far as saying its fine for Local Authorities to re-sell equipment.

We could make a fair amount on ebay :)

I would love to help, and we have 90 machines coming out of service this month (2ghz cels, 256mb ram).

But we are a joint catholic and CofE school, and they prefer we give ours to the local Africa charity.

I will run this past my NW manager tho

crc-ict:I think he only takes monitors with working computers

comedydave:I also send computers to a local africa charity but that is on hold at the moment as they send things to Kenya and there is a bit of a problem.

However, I'm sure this guy is doing something useful with them, and after all charity begins at home. Give him a ring if you like and get more info about what he actually does - I think I deleted the email in which he told me exactly

I don't know what I am supposed to do with my surplus equipment - I have never asked and quietly do what I like - the head teachers know and that is good enough for me.
