Has anyone out there successfully managed to use SMART software on non-SMART boards/screens. I'm trying to use SMART floating tools on a Clevertouch interactive screen. SMART Notebook seems to work OK but the tools on the floating dock do not. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

We use SMART Notebook on nearly entirely non-SMART devices now. Some CleverTouch LCD screens, but mostly Epson EB485wi projectors. We've had a couple of issues with the tools not working properly, but this seems to improve with each release. Their official stance is that the tools may or may not work properly, as they have little control over what hardware you're using it with.

Licensing is as follows:

For each machine using SMART Notebook, you need a license. By default, you receive such a license with each official SMART device. For non-SMART devices, you need to buy a SMART Notebook Classroom license. These cost around £299.

This licenses you for the current version, and includes 1 year of SMART Notebook Advantage (upgrade protection). This 1 year cover applies to all SMART licenses - be they ones that came with boards, or those which are bought separately.

Thereafter, if you want to continue getting new versions, you pay for a subscription to Advantage. Pricing is not too bad for that, Between about £16 and £34 per year per device.

Those prices are a guide though - we bought our licenses a while back now.

Hi Guys, thanks for the responses. The software is licenced but not activated - don't think that should make a difference. Installation completes successfully and the floating tools (smart ink?) appear but when clicked on are non-functional, for example, when clicking the keyboard icon, nothing happens. It may just be that they are incompatible with Clevertouch hardware?

Ok, I have now found a similar problem is happening here also, since upgrading to the latest version of SMART Notebook.

The SMART support team have told me that the latest version of SMART Notebook has removed the Floating Tools entirely, and replaced its use with the SMART Ink tools instead. Those tools are the little floating toolbar that should appear on programs (other than Notebook and Office, as they have their own tools built in).

I would suggest, in your case, contacting the support team at SMART.

I've had a further reply from SMART that didn't help at all. The only solution appears to be to roll back to version 15.0.

I am arguing with them to point out that we paid nearly £10k for this software, including the subscription side to keep it up to date. There is no point in this subscription if we cannot update to newer versions as they decided to remove a widely used feature randomly.
