marvin Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Can i use tightvnc to remote control my owrk pc from home. Basically want to set it up so i can work from home? Is it easy? Does it matter if we have a proxy setting in school?

However I reckon Logmein https://secure.logmein.com/home.asp?lang=en Will work better for you and from experience it's easier to setup (you don't have to tweak as many firewall rules, etc). The answer to the proxy question is pretty much it depends, usually proxies only apply to outgoing connections but it depends how your "proxy" is implemented.

mattx Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 VNC / TightVNC will work - you need to forward the relevant ports though - 5800 & 5900. I have an encrypted VNC session between going between the school and my network at home. The DynDNS I setup also helps lots on my home network.

marvin Posted January 9, 2008 Author Posted January 9, 2008 how do i update the client widget? I check for updates and it tells me that the software is up to date? On my system tray the logmein icon has a red cross on it and says its enabled but offline!!!
Geoff Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Check your web proxy software. It sounds like it might be blocking logmein from connecting.
marvin Posted January 9, 2008 Author Posted January 9, 2008 we use netsweeper and i have added the address on there but this doesnt make any difference. Logmein still has a red cross on it!!! The wierd thing is i set it up and was working for few weeks but recently it shows this certification error and i cant connect any more!!!
brubakes Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 I used UltraVNC to get to my work computer from home or vice versa. I do have to first connect to my works VPN to remote my workstation in the office. Work to home requires only have VNC installed.

Logmein blocked by our broadband web filtering service (no chance of getting them to unblock it) and VNC no go as LEA IT services will not open up the ports for me to access my other primaries servers. Have got VPN access to the servers from home but most of the calls where I would need to check the servers would be during the daytime.
Friez Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 any remote control software will do it -- but you need to make sure ports are unblocked to allow traffic over them, you do this at your proxy and/or may need ports forwarded at your router. ALSO: You may run into trouble if you're a school like us and have RM blocking ports out too, which will require you to get them to allow the ports through for you (at a cost).

Surely if you can VPN then you should be able to use local remote desktop or VNC (once you've connected to the VPN......)?

TechSupp Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Sorry can't help with the setting up of a VPN as mine was all set up with the YHGfL who supply our broadband and its all done externally to the school somehow. As for opening ports etc, can't as the switch that controls it is owned and maintained by the council network services team and they are the ones not too interested in letting me have access accross the network from one school server to another even if I support them.
