abillybob Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Hey Guys The girlfriend tried updating to iOS 8.1 (I think) and the update failed and went into recovery mode. She has got 100's of pictures on there and no backup. The phone hasn't been restored or messed with since it went into recovery mode. Is there a way to get the photo's back? She's very upset and after a bit of research I'm having trouble. Just wondering if one of you geniuses could lend a hand!? Thanks Guys!
ZeroHour Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Apple only let you upgrade to the latest version 8.3.1 so it was probably that but sadly I dont think there is a way to pull of the images in recovery mode. Which iPhone is it?

Which iPhone is it? iPhone 4s. I was worried that was the case! It seems ridiculous to me as the photo's must be on there or some kind of file system so why can't you just browse it! Anyone else have any idea?
abillybob Posted August 27, 2015 Author Posted August 27, 2015 It now won't restore, gives me an error number 2! Tried restoring via iTunes and updating! Also tried downloading a ipsw file and loading it! Still gives me the same God Damn error 😢😡 Is it broken? All she did was an OTA update!! I mean seriously!
ZeroHour Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 It *may* be more possible on older devices that don't support encryption but I am not sure if that's the case with the 4s. Xda developers may have a few tools. I think you may need to try a DFU restore which is a bit different but I can't remember the full instructions for that.

Thats why you can't just browse to the files, would defeat the object of the encryption.

ICTDirect_Dave Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 I'm asusming she has the iCloud backups that iPhones usually take by default when theyre connected to a power supply and wifi? If so you could always restore that backup to another iPhone, plug it into a pc (tell the phone you truth the pc) then manually pull the images off of it and into your filesystem

abillybob Posted August 27, 2015 Author Posted August 27, 2015 Thanks all for your helpful comments. I already tried the DFU thing but it still didn't help! I found what the issue was, a while back I replaced her battery (the phone was 2-3 years old and the battery wouldn't hold charge) all was fine until it had the update. After doing a bit of research and talking to the guys at AT computers the phone checks the hardware (including battery) to ensure it's a genuine Apple battery of which the one we installed was not. Went down to my chap at AT computers and got a genuine Apple battery for it and replaced the battery. Voila all works fine, bit annoying though as the other third party battery worked fine and was £5 from amazon, it was also 2400mah which meant it lasted for ages! The genuine Apple one was £30 and is only around 1400mah so it won't hold charge as long She only has the free storage from iCloud and she had almost triple what Apple allows so it had only backed up since 28 aug last year and she's never once plugged it into iTunes on her computer, I've setup Google Drive and Google Photo's on her phone to take automatic backups of her photo's now!!! Thankyou all though it was much appreciated!

ZeroHour Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 I really REALLY wouldnt put non official batteries in iPhones. They have a quick charge for example that gets the battery to 80% in an hour and I really would wonder about the quality of a £5 battery taking the extra charge.

Maybe the reason is that Apple wants to make more money off their consumers? I think they would rather have a reputation where the batteries in their phones last longer.
