No Touchpad after Windows Clean install

I'm preparing a touchscreen Acer Travelmate and have lost the touchpad. It arrived with Windows 8.1 (standard) and the touchpad worked. I have tried upgrading to Win 8.1 Enterprise and Windows 10 Pro (currently have Win 10 Pro installed). As soon as I started the install process (from USB media) I lost touchpad functionality - so I couldn't use it to select install language and other settings. I assumed that it would be a driver update thing that I'd be able to resolve when I'd finished the install.

 

The touchscreen still works, but there's no on screen pointer. In device manager, there is no entry for "Mice and Pointing Devices" - until I plug an external USB mouse in and then I get a pointer and the device appears in Device Manager. I have been to the Acer site and downloaded and installed the latest driver from there. The Synaptics Touchpad driver has a setup application, which runs successfully, but other than copying the folder containing the driver to the C: drive, doesn't seem to make any difference. There's a documented keyboard shortcut to enable/disable the touchpad (Fn F7) which I've also tried. There's a bunch of Human Interface Devices listed in Device Manager and I've tried installing the Synaptics driver to all of them too, just incase it was being detected as an HID rather than a pointing device.

 

Any other ideas?

Saw this recetly on 8.1 with a touchscreen driver - Windows had incorrectly identified the device and thought it was a USB device (may have shown as a USB Root Hub or similar, but can't remember now). I looked through the list until I found the corresponding Hardware ID for the device (cross checking against the vendor and device IDs), then manually pointed the device to the drivers and it started working.

That makes sense, but once I get the hardware id from device manager is there anywhere particular to cross check against or is it a job for Mr Google?

I had this on my Acer aspire. Luckily when I went to the support page and checked the drivers they had a synaptic one and an elan one. I installed both and the elan driver was the one I needed. Windows 10 thankfully did detect the touchscreen....

Am away on holiday at the minute but didn't get this working before I left. I tried installing the synaptic driver to ask of the unknown devices - I'll try the elan ones when I get back.
