Good morning all,

I'm trying to re-build a friends laptop that had a hard drive failure. The laptop came with Windows 7 Ultimate and has a genuine sticker with code on it, however it didn't come with any disks (Dell) and I can't make the required recovery disks as the original hard drive is not working.

Can anyone send me, or point me in the direction of an ISO for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit OEM? I have the code, it's just the disk I need.

I have a home premium OEM disk if that is of any use.

Thanks for any ideas.

Hi Kieransaul, thanks for the link, unfortunately I've tried that and it reports that the code is from a pre-installed version of Windows, which it is, and that I should contact the manufacturer. The Dell website has instructions for making recovery disks (which I can't do as the hard drive is broken) and suggests they might be able to sell me a recovery solution. This seems ridiculous considering the price of the operating system was included in the original price of the laptop!

Thanks DJ-1701, that worked with an image I made of my home premium disk, it didn't work with a Pro ISO from work.

That'll be because it's volume media, so it'll only activate with a volume key.

Microsoft are quite clear that your only option now is to go to the manufacturer http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_7-update/how-to-what-are-my-options-for-obtaining-windows-7/528163c1-0b2e-4ad2-a26d-7112851d1dc2

I think you'll need someone with a dell disk as it checks in the BIOS that your code is valid....

Unless anyone here can provide what you originally asked for....

Sorry I can't help more.

I made a disk using my home premium OEM disk and the utility suggested by DJ-1701, this let me choose what version of windows I wanted to install. Once the machine was on the internet it automatically activated using the built in Dell code, I didn't enter the code that is on the machine during installation as I wanted to check everything installed correctly before activating.

-altecsole, thank you for the offer but I've got it working now.
