New webfilter suggestions!

Fellow EduGeeks,

 

I am in the market for a new webfilter and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions. We currently use Lightspeed but have found a couple of small bits we don't like such as P2P being either on or off with nothing in between.

 

I need the filter to be able to do the following:

 

• Filter two\three seperate LAN connections
  
• Allow schedule for access at 1 minute increments
  
• Give better control over P2P such as blocking Hotspot Shield but allowing P2P gaming
  
• Allow authenitaction for BYOD devices
  
• 
  

We have tried iBoss but have found that we can only scedule half hour slots.

We swapped in the last year from a Sophos WS1100 Web Appliance to A Smoothwall S8, as it matched our requirements far better than the existing one, we ended up shortlisting Bloxx and Smoothwall as they both scan the page content and don't rely totally on site categorisation. But I would suggest you speak to each of the companies as they are very helpful and can come up with some very good deals when competing against each other.

I've been looking for alternative solutions for a while now, and plan to change to Censornet next year.

It's well featured, and supports BYOD,

You can download a trial for free and test it out.

 

They also offer a mail filtering solution which is in the cloud, but fully customisable, then will forward the clean mail on to your on-site mail server.

If your mail server is down for any reason, users can log in to the web interface and read and reply to emails from there.

You simply launch the browser, enter an AD username and password and your on the net.

 

Normal network devices authenticate users automatically and doesn't require any kind of agent on the pc.

Hi ITGURU - what I meant is that normally you would have to authenticate against the wireless, and then against the web filter to get access to the network with the appropriate filter settings. With at least Radius authentication the wireless controller talks to the filter and authenticates the client and sets the appropriate filtering policy with just one sign on.

 

You can take it further, for example with Ruckus, iboss have RIOT integration which also feeds back location data from Ruckus to iboss, allowing location based filtering on the fly.
