Anyone know the best way to find work experience, Ideally I'd like to shadow an IT technician in a school or a college. I've search the web and there is nothing, that I could find. Is it best to try emailing companies or schools offering my free services? thanks. Edited by DrewTech

I live in Liverpool at the moment (I'm not a scouser sorry) but I can also do some in kent (near Medway area) it's quite hard to get your foot in the door as no family or friend are working in schools or IT sector.

Thanks for the replies helpful as always.

Email/write to all local schools and colleges, don't be put off by non-replies or rejections. Keep plugging away. I had 3 replies out of 100 letters, 2 were "No but we'll keep you on file" and 1 was my current employer inviting me in for a chat. I started by doing 4 weeks work experience, I'm now assistant network manager :)

100 letters wow! well it worked, did you send your CV and a cover letter or was it a simple letter asking for some time to see how they work?

Its not always easy with family and friends either, Although my work experience I went to a school where I had no family or friends there it was easy to be given a chance to get in to gain experience

I wouldn't send a CV, just a letter or email outlining what you want to gain from the experience, If you say what you want to learn you may get more replies as people will then know what you want to do.

I just want to say that you deserve praise for willing to do work experience to try and get a job, it's the route I went and from 5 weeks experience I went to doing an apprenticeship to now being a permanent member of staff. Best of luck on finding a school!

Keep trying local schools and colleges. Use email, send letters etc. Don't be put off by bad responses or even no responses, it will pay off in the end and you will find somewhere.

It seems like not many young people today are trying to put themselves out there and are instead waiting around for things to "fall into there lap" so to speak.

I live in Netherley at the moment still a bit new around Liverpool, only been here a year. I think I will try email as it's paper friendly then try the old trusted letter if nothing come back.

Again thanks for the replies :)

Just a letter explaining I had an interest in that line of work, I had some self-taught knowledge and wanted to get some real-world hands on experience. I made it clear I was willing to work on a voluntary basis.
