Interactive projector

I am looking into buying an interactive projector for one of the teachers..

 

One of the suppliers is saying you need a special whiteboard if you are going to do it?

 

Is this true? Cant the projector just project onto the existing whiteboard?

It depends on the projector but the epson non-finger ones work fine even on the shiniest of whiteboards but the fingertouch ones like a matt(e?) finish

Also needs to be a hard surface - sounds a bit random, but I was talking to an Epson rep and they'd had people install them projecting onto old smart boards and the finger tracking wasn't accurate.

I’d check with the manufacturer but potentially light reflecting off the board will confuse the sensors. I’m pretty sure that all the major brands use some-kind of laser curtain technology to track the finger touch points. I’d go with what the manufacturer/supplier recommends because at least you have some comeback if it doesn’t work.

 

Certain brands also have limitations on the flatness of the surface, thickness of the board and edge-border if mounting the sensors off the board.

@MJTayloronline The Epson EB-585Wi are rock-solid and come in at a very good price. We bundle the interactive projectors with the TK team whiteboard 16:10 Aspect ratio (Matt) for a clean cut image. We find with the gloss whiteboards you do lose some of the picture quality but still works regardless. Highly recommend Matt boards. (Do keep the permanent marker hidden!)

We have an Epson one installed in our food room over a standard non-glossy dry wipe board and it works wonders. Would also work well with that whiteboard paint.
