Unfortunately I've had to stop leaving the Edge window open due to its high CPU use? I replied just incase people didn't know where to find it, using your post as an initial reference. I also get high CPU in edge but what is more enjoying is that you cannot scroll a page until it has fully rendered. Where as chrome will allow you scroll while loading the content giving the illusion that it is faster, and in realtime I still renders faster that edge and IE. Chrome, long live Chrome!!

sted Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 seems to kill the battery on my surface pro quicker than 8. the interface for a tablet is much worse (metro ie was much easier to use than edge) mail only alerts you if you leave the mail app running on 8.1 it just went bong anyway

Yeah, I've also found the exact same thing. It seems inconsistent when loading the page so sometimes you see the page, then start scrolling down and suddenly it becomes unresponsive for a couple of seconds before you can continue using it. This behaviour actually makes it feel really slow and laggy which is ironic for a browser that's punting itself as the fastest out there. Edge clearly needs a good few more months of development before it's going to be usable and any kind of alternative to Chrome,Firefox or even IE. The way it is just now most users will simply try it for a couple of minutes, realise how slow and useless it is then immediately switch back to their preferred browser. I've no idea what possessed Microsoft to bundle Edge in it's current form? They'd have been better off making IE11 the default and saving Edge for the next Windows 10 update. dblight Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Seem to be having snags with Windows Explorer, copying large files or multiple files, seems to hang everything for a few seconds, once able to launch Task Manager nothing obvious stands out. Anyone else seen this?

Webpages render extremely quickly and I can scroll even while images and other things are still downloading. Do you have the scrolling issue on all websites or just some? Do the websites you visit have lots of adverts? I've no idea what possessed Microsoft to bundle Edge in it's current form? They'd have been better off making IE11 the default and saving Edge for the next Windows 10 update. There's no way Microsoft could have done that. Leaving IE11 as the default browser would have much worse from a PR perspective. As Neowin pointed out, Microsoft are collecting useful data from early adopters of Windows 10 and using that to fix bugs and other issues for when Service Release 1 is released in the next next week or two. Microsoft couldn't have done that if Edge wasn't included in Windows 10. The Verge reports that the first such update is referred to internally as 'Service Release 1' (SR1), and cites unnamed 'sources familiar with Microsoft's plans' who say that it's due to arrive in early August, and could roll out as soon as next week. SR1 will be a maintenance update, focusing on adding polish and stability to the OS, so don't expect any new features. As more people continue to upgrade to Windows 10, Microsoft will gather more telemetry from the OS in action, and will no doubt use that data to help inform development of future maintenance releases.
CAM Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Even though I have my MS account linked to my PC and Phone, Cortana doesn't synch interest or my notepad across the two platforms. This renders PC Cortana potentially useful but relatively useless. Bizarrely, there is some talk going on between the two because it was giving me directions home from work even though I was sitting at home over an hour ago! I need to figure out how to get Outlook at work talking to my Microsoft calendar really.

Do the websites you visit have lots of adverts? Seemed to happen on most pages I tried. Guardian/BBC/etc. I gave up after trying it with 3-4 sites and reverted back to IE/Chrome. I don't think it's down to my hardware (Core i7-5820k, 32Gb, GTX980, SSD) unless there's some kind of conflict. I haven't noticed issues with any other apps or browsers. I also had a laptop which I've upgraded but can recall if it had the same issue as I didn't really persevere with Edge on either machine. I'll give it a try again tonight to check. I had to reinstall my graphics drivers from scratch in order to get nVidia Control Panel back, and I lost my sound for a while, but it's been mostly plain sailing. My only gripe is that my Linksys USB wireless dongle is stuck with 2.4GHz. I've got the latest driver (win 8.1 x64) which worked fine on that OS, but it's not letting me have 5GHz on Win 10. Still... Could be worse I guess.
JRowley Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 I don't have the high CPU usage issue with Edge, but I do have high memory usage. For 9 tabs open it's consuming 1.5GB spread out over 6 processes (7 with the main application). It's not like it using that amount of memory is actually an issue for me as I have 16GB, but perhaps it's doing some clever memory usage to optimise my 'experience'. Edge is of course not finished, we all know this, so I suppose this shouldn't really come as a surprise.
gshaw Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 - Cortana demands a Microsoft account, annoying if you want to solely use your Office 365 login but still have voice search - free Windows 10 license can't be claimed without going through an upgrade, wish there was a power user tool to run locally that would convert the license then allow you to back it up onto a USB stick for a clean install straight away - there's a Note button in the Action Center that opens up what seems to be a bundled version of OneNote but again no option to sign in with an Office 365 account rather than Microsoft Account Need to test out a spare machine and join it to Azure AD to see if that solves any of the account annoyances above, a business machine should never see a prompt for a Microsoft Account imo
nickbro Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 @gshaw for point 2, go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and download the tool, you can upgrade your PC using that, which gives you the option to keep files/settings etc, basically you can do a clean install using it

The hardware details are logged with Microsoft when you activate windows. 1

It will provided you are installing to the same disk, if you want to upgrade to Windows 10 and move to an SSD you have to install Windows 7/8/8.1 on the SSD then upgrade.

This also removes it from Explorer - Locally, right click Start > Run, type gpedit.msc, then navigate to Computer Config > Admin Templates > Windows Components > OneDrive - Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage - Enabled Right click Start > Run and enter gpupdate /force Open Explorer and OneDrive should be no more! This didn't work for me. Strange issue but Windows can't find GP Editor no matter how hard I try to find it. Grrrr. I'm on a Surface though I suppose but surely I should still have GP Editor. I'm having some minor performance issues on my Surface 3 with Windows 10, the wifi kept going weird so I re-installed the driver and it seems to be ok *touches wood* Windows 10 tried to install all the apps I have ever previously installed on an old Win 8.1 machine automatically so I had to go down the list of apps that where downloading and try to cancel them all. The start menu though I like that it's back I don't like a alphabetical letters and how it shows Metro apps next to x86 apps. I'd much prefer it if the side panel was only for Metro and the list was just full of x86 apps... I'm hoping they'll change this because after I installed everything it looks a huge mess and my OCD is going mental. Edge I have now gotten used to, the odd webpage that doesn't work (Download button for Google Drive) I just now open quickly in IE using the menu. Cortana keeps going weird and asking me to try again later. The drivers don't seem to be 100% stable even on a Surface 3 which you would have though Microsoft should have been on top of as it's their own hardware. All in all I like it and it has potential but it really does need still a lot more work doing to it to make it the best OS to date, 7 is still my favourite. Hopefully within the next month or so Microsoft can fix these little hiccups with some good solid Windows Updates.

If I was to install a fresh image of Windows 10 Pro from the VLSC on the Surface would I still have all the support for the drivers etc... from Microsoft since I'm no longer running the OS that came pre-installed?

I don't see why that wouldn't work. The latest Surface 3 drivers mention they are compatible with the Pro and Enterprise editions of Windows 8.1 (under System Requirements). rich_tech Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 I am finding that Edge crashes when you try to run a downloaded program from within it for me, it wont allow any interaction and just plays a noise when trying to do anything within it, shame really as it has a MUCH improved feel to it compared to the crippled donkey of a browser that IE has become, it still feels a Beta product to me as others have said. Looks still are not great on this compared to Mac/Linux, it has improved slightly though nothing "WoW" nVidia drivers are the usual at a release, though nowhere as near as bad as it was on 8 release, I have had them crash out a couple of times and lose the second monitor connection, but thats not 100% windows fault ill wager. Usual story, had to download the USB3 drivers and the proper VIA audio drivers here for my machine also, the windows ones didnt do much and I couldnt get anywhere near USB3 speeds without them.
