Cheap tablet with pretty good sound?

The French dept have approached me to ask if I can look into getting a couple of tablets for them. They specifically want to record both video and audio to be able to use it as evidence of speaking and listening.

They don't want anything flash, just something that will do the job.

I have a linx but I don't think the audio quality will be good enough.

Any suggestions gratefully received

Not Learnpads - I'm a fan, but one of the few complaints is that they're not loud enough to hear in the classroom.

I'm not sure if it would suffice, but we tend to use an iPod touch for something like that as the quality for both is pretty good and there not too expensive. I know it's not a tablet, but it's just a thought. I take it though that they want to be able to play back to students for feedback and need the bigger display? When you say cheap what sort of money are you talking about? Might be worth looking at a Terrapad from Very PC. They're very good tablets. You'd have to try one though to see if the quality would be suitable. I think both cameras are 2.0mp, quality is pretty good, I can't remember what the audio is like though.

I know it's not what you've asked, but wouldn't a Dictaphone/portable recorder be more affective?

Not sure how great a price that is, and they're refurbs, but they have in-built beats speakers which are supposedly good? Many tablets have poor audio IME, unless you buy the more expensive ones.

Take a look at the Hudl2. We've just got 5 of them in for our MSEND department. While testing them and setting them up I was blown away with how loud the built in speakers were. £99 is a bargain along with various funky colours. The only downside we could see was battery life isn't great.

For what you want, the iPod touch is probably your best option, its portability over even a 7 inch tablet makes it better for recording audio and video (we use them in foundation stage for evidence collection). However if you want something to run tablet apps too, I agree with gyg93, the HP slate 7 is probably best for what you want. Or if you want to stick with windows, try the Dell Venue 8 pro.

The first thing I would establish is what operating system do you want them to have.

At VeryPC we offer a few different tablet options best to call to discuss. Personally tablets will always have not great sound as they are designed more as a browsing tool/for simple work.

 

One option you could look at would be the Zoom Q4 its a video/audio recorder. It is not cheap but in a department that will want clear speech, this would be a good unit.

I picked up a 7" ASUS ME170C for about £60 off Ebuyer recently. Image quality on the camera isn't great but i'd take it over an iShiny iPad any day.
