So I've just read the "Major Incident Report" sent to us by YHGfL regarding the Internet outage we had on Tuesday morning.

Does anyone else think that "Tuesday 7-9am" is a silly time to have a "usual at risk period"?

It does seem to be quite late on in the day for that sort of thing. I would have thought that it should be something like midnight til 6am but to be honest I'm not sure what ours is. Might need to check that at somepoint.

Tuesday 6-9 has been the JaNet maintenance period for over a decade that I know. That was the maintenance period when I was in university in 2003, for example (although, that was the network/infrastructure maintenance period. There was another maintenance period for systems, which IIRC was a weekday afternoon).

All our maintenance on our leased line is done between midnight and 3AM, with a few weeks notice, and info on how long its likely to be down for within that window. So i think that time from Janet is bad.

Given that JANET is a 24x7 operation and people do use the connection all the time, and that they want to be able to contact other support services if an incident happens during an upgrade, I'm not sure what a better time would be (and yes, I've worked for a place that uses JANET that would have been far more inconvenienced by losing the connection at 2am).

Indeed @Roberto. A lot of scientific data is passed over Janet at night for example.

I worked for a major Uni in the 90s and this was our maintenance period, tied into the JANET maintenance period (in fact, I think it was the same thing as we were part of the then new SuperJANET backbone). Custom and practice and all that.
