Having recently migrated mobile providers we rolled out 130 iPhones to staff all Meraki managed from Blackberry BES.

We still have some staff using their own devices.

It was decided after consideration and discussion with HR to shift the Passcode requirement option to exchange rather than device level thus encompassing all BYOD users forcing them to require a pin code on personal devices.

Most have accepted this change without argument as its already detailed in the AUP and Staff Handbooks however a few have complained bitterly of the audacity of their employer enforcing a passcode on their own devices.

When asked for good reason why this is an issue we received many excuses but by far the best has been "Its downright dangerous! Now I have to mess around trying to enter a pin code every few minutes just to check my emails or Facebook/Twitter updates which is unacceptable especially whilst driving!!!"

"If I end up killing someone its going to be all your fault!"

Morons!

What does you policy state about having email on personal devices? Can they use it or do they just use it because they can?

If they choose to add email to their phone they should be aware as most phones pop up with a message before you complete setup with a security warning.

Apart from the obvious issue, Tell them if they must use their device when driving to setup a trusted device so when the phone is paired with the car it bypasses the lockscreen. :)

oh and i'm sure the excuse "my employer forced me to have a pin code on my device which is the reason I ran over someone" will stand up in court :p

I suppose it depends how clearly HR communicated this change and the implications to end-users.

Do iPhones these days actually warn "if you connect to this server it'll enforce $settings"? Back when I had one on iOS 6.0 it'd happily join (exchange 2007) without informing you, whereas an Android device would throw up an "are you sure? dialogue with details of what would be changed.

The driving excuse? I'd bring that up with HR, especially if that's on-the-job driving, because that's just a disaster waiting to happen.
