FN-GM Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Hi I am no SIMS expert but when SIMS is updating the client machines and they freeze and don’t update, what is causing this and how can it be fixed? Thanks
dhicks Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 > I am no SIMS expert but when SIMS is updating the client machines > and they freeze and don’t update, what is causing this and how can it > be fixed? Could it be local user permissions? SIMS might be trying to write something that needs admin privalages to be written. To fix a knackered SIMS client install, complete un-install and install again from scratch seems to fix most problems. Another solution (one that I'm considering) might be to run the SIMS client over terminal services instead of locally on each machine, save having to update clients at all. -- David Hicks
FN-GM Posted January 2, 2008 Author Posted January 2, 2008 Hi Its not rights because it does it on some machines and i am updating on my desktop and i have full admin rights. Z
enjay Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Could it be volume of traffic or too many clients trying to get at the same setup.exe file at once?
FN-GM Posted January 3, 2008 Author Posted January 3, 2008 No becuase i was doing it remotely from home at 9:45 ish
Jawloms Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Have you got any UNC's in your C:\Windows\SIMS.INI? If you have, change them to the actual drive mapping instead.
GlennT Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 I had this after the most recent upgrade. Even if the user was in the local admin group sometimes the upgrade would fail for no reason. However, I found that if I logged on to the client machine as a user with FULL domain admin rights, it worked. Might be worth a go?
FN-GM Posted January 3, 2008 Author Posted January 3, 2008 Well thats the thing i have them all and it still didnt do it, i left it for 3 hours and it did it after all that time.
GlennT Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 aahh....the joys of SIMS. Oh well, glad you got it sorted.
FN-GM Posted January 3, 2008 Author Posted January 3, 2008 Yes but 3 hours for each person that is ridiculous. I have another separate problem but I think I new post might be in order. I hate this software! Z
GlennT Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Join the club! Was there any error messages or anything obvious in the logs? Was the machine rebooted inbetween?
FN-GM Posted January 3, 2008 Author Posted January 3, 2008 The machine was rebooted a few times before i got this error i have made the following post http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=143282#143282 Thanks Z
GlennT Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 errrr....... New one on me! Have you logged it with Capita [or whoever provides your SIMS support]?
GlennT Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Bit of a long shot but have you updated the client on the SIMS server?
FN-GM Posted January 3, 2008 Author Posted January 3, 2008 i didnt do the updates so i cannot answer that one
m2d2 Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Hi Its not rights because it does it on some machines and i am updating on my desktop and i have full admin rights. Z How many machines actually have the problem? Is it just your desktop?
FN-GM Posted January 3, 2008 Author Posted January 3, 2008 Its happened to mine and a few around the school. Z
mrtechsystems Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Just some tips On the client machines I would recommend I would check the following C:\windows\sims.ini to see if it is pointing to the right path to the server Also what I do is rename the SIMS.NET folder in the program files and rerun the simsinst.exe program for a reinstall on the client machine Hope this helps a little for sims users
enjay Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 Have you tried a delete-then-re-install of SIMS on the PC, so rather than updating the existing install, you're putting a fresh copy of the new one on? Would be interesting to see if the full install fails too (and would give you a sub-3-hour fix too!)
