Hi

 

Can we keep the bad language down on here please I don't take offensive to it as such (heck half of our membership is made of ex-forces). But the fact is we are public website for professionals and we should act as such and some people do find language on here offensive.

 

The site should be 'family safe' as much as we can.

 

If in doubt think would you mind your parents, head, pastor reading it as they could easily end up on the site.

Bad language also makes it difficult to use Edugeek in the workplace. A lot of us, particularly primary school techies, don't have offices that we can work in privately. I don't want to be looking something up on here in the IT Suite if there is a danger of something offensive coming up on the screen!

No worries language will be kept at a minimum from me. I did notice this a while ago when securus was picking me up when i use the site.

Thing is we don't mind the odd bit of swearing and such but we have had lot creep in over recent weeks. Odd one in jokes and such not end of world but it has crept into some of the 'main threads' and that is where we have to bring it in slightly.

I agree with Andie - it makes the forum hard to use in public, quite apart from the fact that some topics have been blocked at school because of the language used.

I have almost that exact quote printed out in my office wall!

 

The amount of swearing in our office annoys me, particularly given we work in a school. I usually only swear when I'm on my own at myself if I make a balls up, or when I'm at home with my housemates, else I try and keep it to a minimum. It really is un-necessary in most contexts, and for expressing frustration there's hundreds of other words to choose from!

 

Just my opinion.

The use of strong language, as colloquialisms or slang is one thing ... but the common use of strong language is to emphasise an intense emotion through an element of shock. A large amount of the use of strong language has historically been in the form of curses or profanities ... both with religious contexts. The move to a more secular society with limited boundaries (due to mass communications methods of the printing press, radio, television and the Internet) has reduced the effect of these. Gadzooks means little to most people but in the 17th century exclaiming "By God's Hooks" (meaning the nails that were use in the Crucifixion) was considered a mild expletive.

 

Today we tend to use the sexual vernacular to shock others. For some it is at the stage of where the use of certain words are just repetitive use of a word the same way that 'bloody' had been.

 

A good example of this is Ozzie 'Prince of Darkness' Osbourne. The shock value of him using certain words is gone ... it is just an word ... a little thing he adds in because it is the 'easiest' word to use rather than the most appropriate.

 

As a very public site we should remember that the language used is a reflection on the site, the profession, the establishments that we works at as well as ourselves.

Our filters at the LEA have picked up some references in past months, of which some could have getting me into to seriour trouble. Thankfully, the filter people owe me a few favors.

 

Still i agree, i have noticed it step up a level recently, certainly in th past week or two, i just put it down to the festive celebrations and the possibilty of people indulging into one or two more festive beverages than usual.
