Replacing failed RAID HD

So one of the 146GB Seagate SAS HD's has failed in the RAID. Can I replace it with another SAS HD of a different brand or will I have to stick to Seagate so they are all the same make?

Brand should be no issue. Make sure they have the same spindle speed, it is usually a good idea to match them as much as possible in specs just so that the array doesn't have to slow down for a lower specced drive. Same capacity can also be a good idea - I've seen some arrays that complain if they don't match (but that may have just been REALLY rubbish controllers).

Thanks. I'm having a job getting the same capacity drive as I'm told 146GB is EOL so I'm looking at replacing it with a 300GB

Worth trying Dave at ICT Direct @ICTDirect_Dave he can often get stock, and cheap. These are obviously used drives, but I've had great reliability over several years with used ones.

ebay is worth checking out for older drives, i have done this a couple of times with good results.

 

if your struggling to get hold of drives it might be worth looking at pricing up replacements which you can get hold of.

Would you believe it, just popped in the replacement drive that @ICTDirect_Dave sent and another drive failed. The failed drive had been giving unexpected sense errors but just the odd one so I didn't take any notice of them. Looks like I'll be contacting Dave again.

 

Just for the record, this server is one of the Acer Olympic servers so must make a note never to buy Acer again.

Well yes I think all is well. I put the drive in and within 30 seconds the alarm was going off. I first thought the new drive was not compatible but after opening the RAID software it showed the new drive was rebuilding.
