[sims] Academy Conversion sims to sims, new database?

Hi All,

 

Quick question, for those of you that have been the academy conversion process ( sims to sims)

 

did you have a new blank data base of sims or transferred all the data?

did you have a new DFE number

did you have a centre centre number?

 

I have a few concerns about timetabling , exam results and other things that link into SIMS.

We continued with the exact same database, DFE number and name.

 

So, nothing changed from the SIMS side!

Hi Andy,

 

Most of the Academy Conversions I've seen have kept their SIMS database and used the name change patch to allow changes to DFE code and establishment name. I used to be wary of what is often a new establishment (DFE code) laying claim to the historical data of the source school but after discussions with the DFE, they allowed access to the historical data for 'as long as necessary'.

 

On the contrary, FMS databases are always fresh for obvious reasons but the access to old data is allowed.

Agreed. Even via the CAPITA transfer tool, don't even bother!

phew, thanks for letting me know, I'm still concerned FMS needs a new DB , do you run the new FMS side by side , still with access to the old FMS, as we are migrating during the financial year

Yes, you just use Finance Database Selector.

I have been involved with a few Academy conversion. Some kept the same DFE number some didn't (not sure why). However all kept the same SIMS DB. Can't see any reasons to change.

 

All the schools dumped FMS as we would have to pay Capita a big fee for it. The data with the database was handed to the LA and they deal with it. As technically the old LA maintained school has closed, the new Academy is not responsible for the old schools finance.

it depends on what kind of Academy conversion you do, my old school changed DfE number but some schools carry on with the old one, it's a question for the DfE in your particular case.

@andydis you'll need a new FMS database, the structure is very different as you have extra requirements as an academy - you might have to submit a VAT return for starters. Like @FN-GM said, you'll LA will be in touch with regards picking and taking over the db, they should at least leave you with a read only copy if you wish.
