Mouse Cursor Shaking when Mouse Plugged In

Evening All

 

I've got a client with an interesting problem. He prefers using an external mouse when working with his laptop, yet recently, whenever he plugs a mouse into the laptop (on any USB port) the cursor starts to shake on the screen and makes it completely unusable. As soon as you unplug it again, it's fine.

 

The TouchPad works perfectly on the machine. With the mouse, it takes a few minutes on first boot for it to start shaking and we've tried a secondary mouse on the laptop as I thought it would most likely be the mouse, but the same thing happened.

 

Today I've popped in and made sure the latest drivers for USB Controller / Chipset / etc are all installed on the machine and rebooted to try again and again, it was fine for the first few minutes, but then started again. I also tried disabling the track pad in case the computer was getting confused messages from both etc.

 

So, anyone got any ideas of anything else I could possibly try on it?

 

It's a HP ProBook 4530s in case it's something someone has come across before with them?

Try running another OS on it like windows on a Hirons boot USB and see what happens or even try safe mode.

 

Is it a touchscreen device? Could that be causing problems?

 

Is there anything else plugged into any of the other ports that could be causing interference?

He's not using an optical mouse on a shinny surface? Or on a red piece of paper?

This was what I was wondering. Try putting something different under the mouse

Thanks both. Tried different surfaces / pads. Not really shiny just standard wooden desks and a couple of differing mouse pads tried.

 

I might take my mouse with me next time and see what happens with that.

i have encountered this a couple of times. Faulty mouse or a hair on the sensor or faulty USB controller.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the latter as checked his mouse over and tried a second one, but I will take mine that I know works fine on everything else with me next time I'm passing.

Just spotted your response. Not a touchscreen and everything else is unplugged from it. Tried it multiple ports, but will also give the live CD option a try too. Thanks!

^^ this. Sometimes dodgy power adaptors can have weird and wonderful USB/mouse effects

Just humour me here... Has the laptop got a synaptics track pad? If it has, uninstall all the drivers and the settings software for it, install it/let it detect as a bog standard PS2 mouse and then see if the problem occurs again.

 

I've seen an issue with the probook and elitebook where the synaptics touchpad driver interferes with any other pointing device - including it's internal clickstick device - until either the drivers are updated to the latest ones from synaptic or downgraded to the MS driver. Not all devices are supported by the latest drivers from the synaptic website so the downgrade might be your only option. The downgrade is the easiest thing to do to see if it'll make a difference to you.

It is a genuine power adaptor and I have tried that, though more by default than design (tried it with it plugged then moved desks so he could get on with some work but unplugged it as the adaptor is buried amongst other leads).

I'll give this a go. I did try disabling the Synaptics, but didn't uninstall, so I'll see if that makes a difference.
