They don't lord anything over us, the Queen is little more than a puppet at the government's whims. Sure she has some limited powers like the ability to dissolve parliament if it proves a danger to the UK and it's citizens but they can only be executed in limited fashion and dire emergencies because executing said powers will result in severe civil unrest.

The monarchy has it's own private estate whose profits go towards the running of the country in return for a salary. Aside from tourism, the Royal Family's money and the public tax spent on them goes towards diplomatic efforts (meeting heads of state for example), upkeep of historical buildings, maintaining historical traditions like the redcoats in the Palace, providing a mesh to bind the UK together (the Queen would still rule an independent Scotland!) and working with charities to raise their profile and funding.

The Queen isn't just a tourist figure but a force for good in the country with no real power to alter policy. Even Prince Charles' secret letters turned out to be a load of boring codswallop which somewhat disappointed the media sniffing for a scandal. And if anything, the biggest danger to a corrupt government would be The Queen herself as she doubles as a safety net should some horribly fascist power get into the MPs seat. You've already seen how easy it is for an unelected government to form.
