Spanning Tree is good, but not without it's issues. We're going the next logical step - seriously VLAN'ing the network and only live patching ports that have physical devices attached to them. Even without spanning tree (which will off course be enabled anyway) it'd be tough to bring down the entire network with a single loop.
ITGURU Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 We can now get 52 Port Non POE switches (48 copper) and 4 dedicated 10GB SFP+ Ports for £970.00 and the 10GB SFP+ modules are £132.00 Not sure what HP prices for the switch is in comparison. SFP+ modules are also cheaper than SFP.

As soon as linked back the 2 ports are disabled for 60 seconds (adjustable) and I get a syslog notification via email to know what location it happened in-then it's off to the classroom and students denying all knowledge saying it was like that when they came in! lol Live patching ports is OK, but if the network cable is long enough to reach between 2 network sockets it's stil going to loop if both ports are on same VLAN, although it would just take down the students VLAN and not staff if this is the way you go down. True, but I'm going to segregate a bit more granular that 'students' and 'staff'. It'd only take out the one ICT suite, and would be obviously between the two computers that don't have a working network connection...

DMcCoy Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 MSTP with the correct bridge priorities is quite a good idea, especially with vlans, you will also need it for redundancy or distributing vlan load with VRRP if you have a redundant core. Ideally the switches should try and send all the packets to the right place first
psydii Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 I was briefly excited until I saw the price. 48 port 1910: £340 48 port 1950: £1194 Maybe I'll wait for the price to drop, then... Pretty sure you would get pricing much closer to the 1910 if you were buying in bulk from a HP networking partner.
Jose Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 We use the cheaper Cisco Sg500x 10G fibre cheap Chinese modules, 20 pounds each It was way cheaper than a HP quote for the same spec of kit. I would not put anything other than Cisco or HP into your school.
