ITV - Scammers

Is / did anyone else watch this program on Monday night on 9pm. I kinda wish everyone could watch this as i sound like a broken record at work i bang on about all this stuff but yet it feels like it falls on deaf ears. Edited May 18, 2015 by timbo343

Yeah just watched it. Much of the same as what is disused on here regarding 'the Microsoft' scam and ransomware.

 

Shocking (but unsurprising) that 50% of the wifi networks they scanned were unencrypted.

I saw a quick glimpse of the screen. Most of them seemed to be those BT Fon open networks you get with most BT routers.

These guys have special laptops that allow them to see people's routers from the road...

 

...running inSSIDer and Google Earth on any bog-standard laptop!

Amazes me that people still get sucked in. although our caretaker took a call (at home) allegedly from talktalk and was fleased for £800 last Friday. Luckily he mentioned the call to me before I went home and he was able to phone his bank and get it refunded. But both he and his wife spoke to them and gave all bank details, card numbers for debit and credit cards.

Didn't see the show but I did go to check out my friends parents PC the other night as they had been scammed. Apparently they had a call from "Microsoft" who had detected a problem with their computer, etc, etc and they actually fell for it. Sadly they lost £8k of their savings and the banks view was "You gave them access, therefore we owe you nothing".

 

They are following it up with police now to try and reclaim money but it is unlikely that will happen.

 

I have drummed it into my family that they should never give any information out to anyone who phones or emails them but I'm sure they still probably would with the right amount of pressure put on them in the right way.

I can't watch stuff about the MS Scam without getting PTSD from the horrific, abusive phone call I endured at the hands of one of these scammers. Being told they know where I live and how they're going to have me raped is pretty much a big fat NOPE.

I saw the programme and it just confirmed a lot of what I knew already. However the 'special laptop' they were using didn't seem to pick up many unencrypted wifi system to me - whenever you saw the screen most of them were encrypted - only 1 few not. And in any case - the problem is that most people just leave the setting as they were - but the last few times I have got a new router it has already been set up with WPA2 so why would people change it to unencrypted???

 

Anyway changed all my setting again last night
