We have desktop printers in our classrooms as were a special needs school, we cant let the kids go wandering for follow me (however staff could but they are too lazy,) Anyway what I want to know what printers do people recommend? Low cost per page low cost per printer. The rooms roughly print 2500 pages per year so an outside suppliers out the question as there's not enough volume. Also I am looking at buying PaperCut very soon so I can start monitoring peoples volumes etc.
mikkydoos Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 (edited) Look for consumable prices before you look at printer models. Some are absolutely horrendous and have loads of consumable parts. I have some Epsons... great printers but the toner is astronomical, needs a waste toner bottle!!!!!!, has 4 photoconductor units and 4 imaging drums. Also many lasers come with mini toner bottles out of the box which is a total rip off forcing you into making expensive toner purchases straight away. Some mid range HP's are ok in my experience. Anything where you can get compatible toners and drums. Papercut is great if you want to limit users printing or give a quota. Just monitoring you can do with a free trial of PCut or PCounter etc etc Edited May 13, 2015 by mikkydoos
beancole Posted May 13, 2015 Author Posted May 13, 2015 I've not found any Laser printer that is worth the initial cost given the users only print 2500 pages a year. I'd like something that uses HP 940XL cartridges like the old HP officejet pro 8000, these worked out cheaper that our HP color laserjet 500 MSI's. This way I could save effort with multiple cartridge types.

It exports daily, weekly, monthly and all time totals to CSV so that you can make some fancy graphs of usage to show SLT If you've got networked printers installed on a print server, it'll be straight forward to install it on the server and away you go. Free software options - PaperCut 1

theeggmaster Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 We use a mix of leased MFD/Copiers for high volume or centralised printing, and for smaller print requirements we use these or similar - FREE - Dell 1760NW Printer Deal - IJT Direct They sell remanufactured cartridges through their eBay shop really cheap, and the price per page works out sometimes cheaper than the leased MFD/Copiers.

steveg Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 The new hp inkjets are really good. We've had a X576DW in the main office for over a year and been impressed with it. Probably wont want one quite that big, but the innards of the smaller ones must be similar. It has 1 a4 sized print head, so throws pages out at quite a rate, and the cartridges are huge and last ages. Steve
