Project Cars - Steering Wheel Recommendations?

Picked up a copy of Project Cars the other day and I fancy getting a wheel to play it with. Would be nice if I could find one that's also compatible with my Xbox One as I'd like to use of for playing Forza on that as well.

 

Any recommendations?

 

Anyone else on here playing it on PC?

I'm not playing it, yet. I'm a big fan of racing sims. The Logitech G27 has been good for me on the PC. I have no xbox fu.

The Logitech G27 looks awesome but it seems to be £200+ and I was only thinking of spending around £50-100 in the first instance. There seem to be a few Thrustmaster wheel/pedal combos for around that price but no idea if they're any good?

 

There's a a few wheels that work on both PC and PS4 but annoyingly nothing I've seen so far that's PC and Xbone compatible

Sorry, the only other wheel I have tried was a Logitech GT. It was OK but lacked a clutch and H-shifter. It felt a little clunky (a bit of backlash) and fragile - compared anyway to a G27. I can't find anything for the PC and Xbox One although there is a converter thing that allows use of other wheels on the xbox - but it is £100 for that alone.

The shifter add on and clutch pedal sounds cool but I thought most racing games just use sequential automatic gears so I had doubts about how useful it would be?

@pcstru what race sims do you normally play and are there any others you'd recommend trying that support clutch/shifter? I've enjoyed Forza on Xbox but I'd like to try out some more realistic sims on PC.

Right now I only drive iRacing or Assetto Corsa. Both have a good selection of cars which use the clutch and H shifter. iRacing is simply the best online racing experience out there. The safety rating system can be frustrating for newcomers but it does make for quality racing (rather than first corner mayhem and barge passing), but it is subscription based and content doesn't exactly count as "micro" transactions. You can do the subscription at half the listed price but additional tracks and cars push it up. That said, mastering any car or series requires serious effort and the series available with the basic subscription should keep you occupied for a good while. I compare the cost to putting a car on track for a few hours rather than buying game. Assetto Corsa is a great simulator with a lot of cars that will make use of all the available controls. The lazer scanned tracks are very good and there are also a number of good quality mods showing up for it. Driving a Shelby Cobra round the Nordschleife is one of my favourite ways to fritter away 8 minutes (ish!). The on-line element of AC is a bit hit and miss - there are some organised racing series which tends to make for better racing but pick-up races suffer the usual blight of "will win in the first corner or die!" mentality. I bought a Logitech G25 wheel and pedals a couple weeks ago just for this game, I have the game now but still not gone up to Milton Keynes to pick up the G25. it's very twitchy with xbox pad.

I'm sure now that I own the game I'll find an excuse to go get it one evening this week.

so far ive heard nothing good about the xbox one version impossible to drive and seriously wacky physics, i saw one video where the drive hota car from behind came to a dead stop and the car he hit went to the moon.

I'm playing the PC version with a Wired 360 pad so can't comment on the Xbox one version but the steering with the pad is highly sensitive, to the point that I just stopped playing until I get my wheel and pedals, I'm sure you can adjust the sensitivity settings but out of the box it's pretty much impossible to place anywhere in the top 10 of a race, out of the 4-5 races I did my best finish was 18th out of 20 and I'm pretty sure that was because the 2 behind me had retired.

handled almost identical...although I never managed to get it to a track! but around the city map it was similar!

p.s.....the wheel I have is Logitech Driving Force!

First car I raced with was the Mk2 Escort, ended up on the grass pointing the wrong way too many times so I switched to the Evo X.

Just a quick update, I picked up my Logitech G25 at the weekend and it's incredible what a difference it makes to the game, for the first time I actually won a race and to top it off made it round the Nurburgring without spinning and ending up in a barrier.

 

If you are in to your racing sims then a decent wheel and pedals are a greet investment.

Ugh! The game is ruddy awful. Waste of money. Yes it looks pretty but it handles and sounds like crap. If you're racing on PC then iRacing. If you want a bit of fun, then Codemasters games (yes, I even rate those above Project Cars).

The last thing you really want to do with a racing SIMS is use a keyboard and mouse.

A controller is a good starting point, but a wheel/pedal combo is much better.

 

Thrustmaster 300 or 500, or Logitech G27 are generally good choices due to the force feedback and the weight of the car it can transmit.

I borrowed a mates TM500 over Christmas for use with my F1 2014 and I was significantly faster and more fuel efficient with it than using the PS3 controller.

 

Project Cars is a bit hit an miss from the videos I've seen. Formula Rookie looks to be a heck of a lot of fun, and so does Formula B.. but Formula A is too skittish as it's a made up car and not based off of F1 due to licensing issues.

I'm really enjoying it, playing on PS4 without steering wheel. I have had to look up a few settings to stop cars from under/over steering.

 

I now have all the driving aids turn off.

I wouldn't say that, I'm sure with practice like anything else you could master it with a controller but having a wheel definitely gives a distinct advantage.
