Best Thin Client machine?

Over the next few weeks I'm going to be setting up a test server and a few old PC's acting as thin clients, running Windows Thin PC and booting into an RDS session. If the results are good we will try and implement it properly. I've a few questions that hopefully some of you may have an opinion on:

 

* the intended use is : web surfing, Office, SIMs (for teachers) and not much else, we are trying to do this on the cheap to avoid Citrix etc. Pitfalls? Will we be able to load balance ect without spending extra £££

 

* Servers : real/virtual (we run VMware) or a combo of both? I know this is a bit of an old chestnut and the general consensus is it doesn't matter so long as they are BEEFY... but if you've got a strong opinion, I'm all ears.

 

* Eventually we will replace the old PCs with actual thin client machines... any recommendations? esp for Thin PC (or are they much of a much-ness?)

You might do worse than Chromebooks - web browsing happens locally on the device, taking a load off your servers, and they are perfectly capable thin clients.

nComputing and iGel do some nice little linux based units which are cheap or HP have some All in One thin clients. Think all but the nComputing has free central management solutions the nComputing may be a small charge extra for central management.
